Degerndorf – On Sunday, the brass band and the Degerndorf boys' association were able to look back on four all-round successful festive days. Over the long weekend, they organized the 22nd District Music Festival of the Isar-Mangfall Association in the Music Association of Upper and Lower Bavaria (MON). At the same time, they celebrated their 101st (music) and 51st (boys) anniversaries.

District Music Festival in Degerndorf: The highlight was the field service on Sunday

The highlight was the field service on Sunday, followed by a community choir and procession through the village to the tent on the Windsberg. Brass band chairman Stephan Henschelchen lined up the participating musicians to form the choir after the mass. The surrounding houses resulted in great acoustics. District conductor Elisabeth Hinterholzer from the Holzhauser Kapelle and Ludwig Gaar from the Degerndorfer led through two more festive pieces.

"Just as music plays together, we should also play together in society," Pastor Martin Kirchbichler had previously said in his sermon. "We've had a few years when it wasn't possible to make music and celebrate together. Now it's time to look ahead again and shape the future together."

The speakers, MON President and District Administrator Josef Niedermaier, as well as patron Mayor Michael Grasl, could only agree with this in their welcoming speeches. In the current times of crisis, the community is "getting a little under the wheels," said Niedermaier. She should take an example from music, where, despite all the differences between the individual instrumentalists, there is always a harmonious result in the end.

District Music Festival in Degerndorf: Grasl quotes deceased brass band legend

Grasl quoted the late brass band legend Ernst Mosch. He once said that he liked "performance without talking much". The same applies to the two birthday children, the brass band and the boys. They had put together a perfect district music festival – even though the meadow was still a mud hole when the tent was set up. As a thank you and reward, a nice after-party is enough for them.

On Sunday afternoon, 900 participants marched in a procession through the village, which was decorated by the inhabitants with flowers and white and blue ribbons, including 25 music bands and eight clubs. A carriage pulled by four magnificent black cold-blooded horses brought fresh Augustinian supplies to the tent.

They all paid tribute to the organisers – from the two other local bands to the neighbouring Beuerberg, Geltinger and Lüßbach musicians to the more distant bands, marching bands and mountain riflemen from Bad Tölz, Arget, Otterfing and Waakirchen. The Hatzendorf Music Association, which was a friend of the Degerndorfers, had even travelled from Styria.

The Austrians had played on Saturday at the Burschenverein anniversary. At the very well-attended senior citizens' afternoon on Friday, the visitors were well entertained by the young musicians of the various bands in the district. Crowd pullers on Father's Day were the Wiagsogschnein with over 40 young girls and boys as well as a traditional costume fashion show with models from the ranks of the Degerndorfer.

For their services to the Isar-Mangfall district, Matthäus Hammerl, former district director, and Hans Wohlfahrter, former district conductor, were awarded the district badges of honour in gold. Richard Nopper from Bayerischzell also received the gold award from MON President Josef Niedermaier and District Manager Franz Haidu.

It was a nice sign, in the spirit of Pastor Kirchbichler's sermon on interplay, that both Niedermaier and Grasl - one on the clarinet, the other on the tuba - marched along in the procession with their music bands Bad Tölz and Holzhausen, instead of driving in front in a carriage of honor.
