Weather in Germany: Heavy rain, hail and even tornadoes – storm front on the way

First reported on May 22, 15:58 p.m.: Munich – While on Sunday (21 May) you could still enjoy the wonderful summer weather with highs of up to 29 degrees, the German Weather Service (DWD) is already warning of stormy gusts and widespread thunderstorms with heavy rain. It will be similarly warm on Monday, but in the afternoon there will be heavy thunderstorms. This is reported by the weather portal wetter.net. Accordingly, these are particularly strong from the North Sea to the Black Forest. The weather conditions at the beginning of the year were already turbulent and at the beginning of May, severe thunderstorms and storms in Germany caused a lot of chaos on the roads.

"It's going to be a tough thing to do today in the West and North. Especially in the northwest, there is a threat of severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail and squalls in the afternoon. Even the formation of tornadoes cannot be ruled out," warns meteorologist Dominik Jung, managing director of the weather service Q.met, to wetter.net. "The maximum values also crash again after that. Today it will be up to 28 or 29 degrees and muggy, tomorrow a maximum of 19 or 20 degrees and a lot of wind and a few showers at the beginning," Jung continued. An overview of what the weather will be like in the coming days below.

Storm over Germany until the middle of the week – Pentecost beautiful and summery again

According to the German Weather Service DWD, there will initially be stormy gusts and thunderstorms with heavy rain on the North Sea. On Tuesday, showers and thunderstorms are also forecast in the north and southeast. In the south, there is even a risk of larger hail accumulations. After the middle of the week, however, the weather situation is expected to calm down somewhat and increasingly shift to the Alps and weaken. According to the DWD, there is a low probability of thunderstorms until Friday.

According to the weather expert, there will even be reason to rejoice again from Wednesday. Because: "From Wednesday the sun will often shine again and so it goes into the long Pentecost weekend. Lots of sunshine from Friday to Whit Monday and especially on Sunday and Monday it gets up to 26 or 27 degrees," says Jung. An Italian seaside resort is already preparing for a tourist rush at Pentecost. Other cities in Italy have even already set up red zones to protect their cities from the onslaught of holidaymakers.

Severe weather in Germany: Weather forecast for the coming week

If there is still a threat of severe thunderstorms and storms in parts of Germany today and tomorrow, Wednesday will allow us to breathe a sigh of relief again. Here's what it looks like in the coming days:

  • Tuesday, 23 May: Alternating sun and clouds. In the east more showers and thunderstorms, 13 to 21 degrees
  • Wednesday, 24 May: Mix of sunshine and clouds, hardly any showers, windy, 15 to 19 degrees
  • Thursday, May 25: Often friendly with a mix of sun and clouds, dry, 16 to 21 degrees
  • Friday, 26 May: Pleasant start to the long weekend with lots of sunshine and a few clouds, 16 to 24 degrees
  • Saturday, May 27: Mostly friendly, with sunshine and dry, 18 to 24 degrees

Those who have planned excursions and hikes over Pentecost will be rewarded with sometimes humid weather. In general, it looks like very warm weather until the beginning of June. Again and again, the maximum temperatures of 25 to 31 or 32 degrees should be reached. According to weather experts, the 30 degree mark should even be reached more frequently at the turn of the month.
