A parachutist in Saxony escaped with serious injuries, but with his life. His umbrella did not open.
Dessau-Roßlau – He was looking for the ultimate adrenaline rush during a parachute jump – but a 53-year-old from in the district of Meissen (Saxony) experienced the nightmare of every jumper in the middle of the fall. His main parachute did not open during the jump on Saturday afternoon (May 21, 2023).
Reserve parachute opens - man makes a violent crash landing
Only a few hundred meters above the ground, the reserve parachute opened. The man crashed into panels of a solar field near the Dessau-Roßlau airfield and was seriously injured. This was announced by the police. He was taken to a hospital, but there was no danger to life, it said. How the accident could have occurred is unclear at this point in time and is being investigated.

Gerald Bürgel, chairman of the Zerbst parachute sports club, explained the accident of the club member to Bild. Sports colleagues in Dessau had organized a jumping weekend and the victim had jumped from about 4000 meters. "But after the free fall, he didn't find the handle of his parachute, and he didn't find it during several follow-up attempts," says Bürgel. According to Bürgel, the reserve parachutes trigger between 1000 and 1200 meters altitude. The sensors then register that the jumper has not triggered the main glider.
Accident in Saxony: Springer suffers leg injury
"According to this, the reserve parachute worked normally. Unfortunately, however, the jumper was no longer able to change direction and therefore landed on the solar field," says Bürgel.
