2023-05-23T18:49:34.379Z

Highlights: A low-pressure area brings a lot of rain to Spain, which falls locally as heavy rain. On the Costa Blanca, since the night of Tuesday, May 23, the south of the province of Alicante has been particularly affected. In the Vega Baja around Torrevieja, schools will remain closed this Tuesday in most municipalities. The situation is not as bad as in Italy, but hailstorms and heavy rain have already destroyed crops in Murcia and Andalusia.

Heavy rain on the Costa Blanca: Flooded streets and closed schools. Orange alert until Wednesday.

Update, May 23, 12:30 p.m.: In Alicante, there are cancellations on tram lines 4 and 5 due to heavy rain. Traffic between the Avenida de las Naciones and Holanda stops, in the Playa de San Juan district, is temporarily interrupted. On the road between Benimarfull and Alcocer de Planes, near the airfield, the provincial fire brigade this morning freed a man from his vehicle, which had been swept away by masses of water. With a human chain, the man was rescued unharmed from the car.

Rain on the Costa Blanca: Flooded roads and fallen boulders

Several streets are flooded because the sewer system cannot drain the rain masses quickly enough. Even the country, which has dried up due to the drought, cannot absorb the rainfall that is urgently needed. The situation is not as bad as in Italy, but hailstorms and heavy rain have already destroyed crops in Murcia and Andalusia.

This Tuesday morning, May 23, the N-325 near Aspe is closed due to flooding. According to the provincial fire department, three cars were trapped by the masses of water and a long traffic jam formed. The A79 in Torrelano (Elche) was also partially closed. In San Vicente del Raspeig, Elda and Elche, the fire brigade had to pump out basements and garages or clear chunks from the road that had fallen because of the heavy rain. Also on the A-31 towards Madrid, a long traffic jam arose on Tuesday morning between Elda and Novelda after an accident.

Rain on the Costa Blanca: Orange alert until Wednesday, May 24

A lot of precipitation is also registered in the hinterland of the Costa Blanca. The Valencian weather agency Avamet reports 140 liters per square meter in Ontinyent, on the border between the provinces of Alicante and Valencia. Agres, Cocentaina, Muro de Alcoy, Benillup and L'Alqueria d'Asnar have also rained over 100 litres per square metre in the past few hours. "And there are still many hours of rain to come," says Avamet.
