Karlovac/Munich – A small plane crashed in Croatia, killing three people. According to reports from the German Press Agency (dpa), the crashed small aircraft was registered in the Netherlands. The pilot and the two passengers could only be recovered dead.
The plane took off from Maribor, Slovenia, on Saturday (May 20, 2023) in the direction of the Croatian Adriatic town of Pula. For initially unclear reasons, it crashed in the Mali Makovnik forest area on Mount Kapela, about 90 kilometers southwest of the capital Zagreb as the crow flies.
Small plane crashed in Croatia: fuel on board is said to have ignited
It is possible that the fuel on board ignited during the flight, speculated the chief aviation inspector Danko Petrin. According to Croatian media, the bodies of the pilot and two passengers were found in the completely burned-out wreckage of the Cirrus SR20 aircraft.

Light or small aircraft are aircraft of different classes with low weight. These include single- and twin-engine powered aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of 5.7 tonnes. According to the International Civil Aviation Organization's classification of airworthiness, aircraft with a take-off weight of more than 5.7 tons are considered large aircraft that require extensive certification.
