The Ministry of Health will hold a hearing today (Wednesday) for senior officials of Assuta Ramat Hachayal Hospital following a series of fertilization failures in recent times, including finding a genetic incompatibility between father and son. The ministry is also considering closing the hospital's fertility unit, in light of "problematic conduct and a backlog of unusual events." Moreover, the ministry noted another unreported "serious incident" in which 13 fertilized eggs were dried up.

"The aforesaid indicates that the hospital did not report to the Ministry of Health the suspicion of a serious incident of genetic incompatibility, despite the fact that this is a real suspicion of an unusual event that occurred during and after treatment, contrary to the instructions of the Medical Division Circular," the ministry said in a statement. "These incidents and their proximity, as well as their failure to report to the Ministry of Health, raise concerns about harm to public health. Therefore, the possibility of ordering the full or partial closure of the unit is being considered."

These are not the only unusual events on the network. Channel 12 reported yesterday that a couple who arrived at the fertility department at Assuta Rishon LeZion Hospital about a month ago claims that the hospital may have switched between the man's sperm samples and those of a stranger.

In addition, Israel Hayom published another incident today on the Assuta network, this time in Beer Sheva, in which a woman was mistakenly diagnosed with cancer following a typing error.

In addition, Medical Professions Ombudsman Dr. Boaz Lev announced this week that he was appointing a commission of inquiry following a series of these incidents. The committee will examine professional, organizational and managerial aspects, and the individual incidents that raise suspicion of poor professional conduct, as well as an in-depth look at the fertilization system from a network perspective, including examining the reporting procedures relevant to these incidents.

In addition, the committee will examine the root causes of the errors, as well as other relevant issues that will be found during their examination to require examination and attention. This is the same committee that examined the incident in Assuta Rishon LeZion.
