Why always work behind closed doors? That's what the clubs and organizations in Steingaden said to themselves and called for an "open day" in club life.
Steingaden – It was a brilliant idea: Georg Sieber, chairman of the Trachtenverein in Steingaden, ran into open doors when he recently told his colleagues at a board meeting about the plan that drives him. "Why work behind closed doors? Why not make visible the diversity of the numerous clubs in the community of 3000 souls?" he asked.
The answer was an event at which all groups show themselves and give insights into their activities. "I didn't have to do much convincing, everyone was immediately enthusiastic," Sieber describes. The first "open day" in Steingaden's club life was born.
By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Schongau newsletter.
And the response was great: Numerous visitors streamed through the auditorium of the primary school and other rooms in the Steingadener Fohlenhof, where one stand presented itself next to the other. Whether the support association of the kindergarten or the volunteer fire brigades of the various districts, whether the youth band Lechbruck-Steingaden, the fishing clubs Steingaden and Urspring or the umbrella organization itself, the cultural community under the direction of Mayor Max Bertl: There was plenty of information about the diverse hustle and bustle in the club life of the westernmost Pfaffenwinkel community with its 53 districts.
The best thing to do is to take a taster course on the instrument of your choice
Participation was also the order of the day: For example, if you are flirting with getting the next generation excited about playing a wind instrument, you could take advantage of a "taster course" at the orchestra's stand.
For working with the little ones, the kindergarten's support association is also indispensable. In order not to always strain the community coffers, but to make purchases on their own, the board has established a professional network over the years and launched many campaigns - from appeals for donations to swap meets.
All news and stories can also be found on the Facebook page of the Schongauer Nachrichten.
"In this way, we were able to purchase many things for our kindergartens," says board member Michael Battenberg. Play material, crockery, a climbing frame, digital cameras, tablets or a soap bubble theater: Without the commitment of the volunteers, things would look much poorer in the playgroups.

Appeal to young people
But Trachtler boss Sieber has another wish: to encourage young people to participate. Get out of your own four walls, don't spend time behind your smartphone, but get involved in social life. "That's what communities need. Integrate yourselves into our community, become active," is his appeal.
The local newspapers in the district of Weilheim-Schongau are represented under "merkur_wm_sog" on Instagram.
His own association can't complain about a meager membership: the Steingadener Trachtenverein has almost 300 members. To counteract the "fast-moving times", as Sieber puts it, and to give folk music a new impetus is the top priority: "Customs, shoe-plates, the cultivation of the dialect: we want to promote all of this."
