Brussels warns of drifting deficits in France

A return to budgetary normality is now in sight in Brussels. In early 2024, the deficit and debt criteria will apply again, including with the reform of the Stability and Growth Pact recently presented by the Commission.

Valdis Dombrovskis has, in any case, taken a date with the Member States on Wednesday, on the occasion of the European Semester, this spring meeting that provides recommendations to national governments to help them build their budget for the following year.

"Given the uncertainty surrounding the macroeconomic outlook, the Commission does not intend to open new excessive deficit procedures at this stage. However, we will propose to open them in spring 2024," stressed the Commission's executive vice-president, calling on national leaders to "keep this in mind".
