Bavaria's bathing lakes are several degrees colder than at the same time last year. The reason is the cold and wet spring.
Munich - The weather is often cool and rainy this spring. This has an impact on the temperatures of the Bavarian lakes - and also on the number of tourists.
16 degrees instead of 20 degrees: Cold weather in Bavaria has consequences for bathing lakes
The water temperature in the Altmühlsee in Franconia was around 2022 degrees in mid-May 20. This year, at the same time, the value was only 16 degrees. This is according to data from the Bavarian Hydrological Service. The bathing season at the Altmühlsee near Gunzenhausen usually begins around Pentecost, as Hans-Dieter Niederprüm, managing director of the Franconian Lake District Tourism Association, said. This year, however, he expects the season to start later.
The cold and wet spring has also had an impact on the number of day tourists. These are still missing, said Niederprüm. The turnover could also not be made up. The balance of day tourists for this year will therefore certainly be somewhat lower. However, Niederprüm is optimistic about the "excellent" demand for overnight stays in the Franconian Lake District. And: If the weather is good, the Altmühlsee warms up within a few days.

Cool spring makes for cold lakes in Bavaria - and fewer tourists
The effects of the cool spring can also be felt in Chiemgau. The season started very late and people were reluctant to book, according to a spokeswoman for Chiemsee-Alpenland Tourism. For Pentecost, however, there is now a very good demand. However, compared to 2022, bookings were lower this year. Last year at Pentecost, the weather was already very good. This is also shown by a look at the water temperature. While the water in Lake Chiemsee was almost 2022 degrees warm in mid-May 18, this year it was just under 13 degrees.

In mid-May, the water in Lake Tegernsee was also about three degrees colder than at the same time last year. The lake, which is surrounded by mountains, is not a classic bathing lake. But here, too, the weather in spring had a great influence, said Christian Kausch, Managing Director of Tegernsee Valley Tourism. "There wasn't much going on." For Pentecost, the booking situation is now very good. After this spring, however, he hopes for a golden autumn with many warm days. (kam/dpa)
