Great interest in the Thomas Mann Festival

2023-05-24T07:09:54.431Z

Highlights: The Thomas Mann Festival ended in Bad Tölz last weekend. Since 2017, there have been continuous events on Thomas Mann, his former summer house and his works in the spa town. The exhibition "Responsibility of the Spirit" in the City Museum can still be seen there until the end of July. 2025 will also mark the 150th anniversary of the writer's birth. However, Botzenhart is toying with the idea of organizing something in 2024 as well. In 1924, "The Magic Mountain", one of Thomas Mann's most important works was published.

Last weekend, the Thomas Mann Festival ended in Bad Tölz. Organizer Christof Botzenhart draws a very positive balance

Bad Tölz –. "Almost all events were very well attended," reports the Third Mayor. You wouldn't have expected that. The visitors came not only from Bad Tölz and the surrounding area, but from all over Germany. Botzenhart knows of guests from Hamburg, Erfurt and Wetzlar. But literature lovers from German-speaking countries had also travelled to the spa town. Since 2017, there have been continuous events on Thomas Mann, his former summer house and his works in Bad Tölz. "My impression is that word of this is getting around more and more in professional circles or has already established itself," says Botzenhart. The advertising for the festival has been widely distributed. For example, advertisements were published in the journal "Literatur in Bayern", and references to the events were sent to the "Buddenbrookhaus" in Lübeck and to the "Monacensia" in Munich, Botzenhart cites a few examples.

There is also a great deal of interest in the region

It was pleasing that many citizens from Tölz and the surrounding area came to the lectures, song recitals, guided tours and the special performance in the marionette theater, reports Botzenhart. Above all, events with artists or experts from the region were well received, such as the readings by Albert von Schirnding and the song recital with the Tölz soprano Stephanie Krug. Young people from the grammar school and their teacher also attended. For schools, there was a special promotion for selected events anyway. Only the recital with the well-known soprano Christina Landshamer fell short of expectations, Botzenhart regrets.

The organizer is also pleased with the positive feedback from the contributors. "They were very impressed by the support in Tölz," says Botzenhart with regard to room reservations, food, accessibility of contact persons and the technical equipment. It is important, says Botzenhart, that the participants "go home with a positive image of Bad Tölz".

Exhibition in the City Museum until the end of July

Financially, they have "not yet made a cash flow," says the organizer. However, it is already obvious that it will not be possible to hold the festival without a subsidy. "Such events do not cover themselves." The next Thomas Mann Festival is scheduled to take place in two years. 2025 will also mark the 150th anniversary of the writer's birth. However, Botzenhart is toying with the idea of organizing something in 2024 as well. In 1924, "The Magic Mountain", one of Thomas Mann's most important works, was published.

Even though the festival has now come to an end, the exhibition "Responsibility of the Spirit" in the Tölzer Stadtmuseum can still be seen there until the end of July. It provides a multi-layered insight into the life and work of Thomas Mann. First of all, it is about the writer's anti-fascist commitment.
