The consequences of the storms in Italy are being felt, not only in agriculture. Travelers should expect closed roads and limited train traffic.

Rome/Munich – After the devastating rains in Emilia-Romagna, Italy, the clean-up work continues. Within a short period of time, 21 rivers had burst their banks and 36 cities and towns were flooded. A total of 48 local governments in Italy reported landslides. Around Ravenna, Bologna and Forlì, the water that stands in fields and villages can only drain poorly. The homes of thousands of people are uninhabitable after the storm disaster in Italy, and reconstruction could take years.

Even if the popular beaches of the region are not directly affected and the extent of the flood disaster refers to the interior, holidaymakers could feel the consequences of the storms. But not only in tourism, but also the effects on agriculture and livestock use can last for years, the local people fear.

After storms in Italy: High damage in local agriculture

Local agriculture in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna is experiencing severe damage after the devastating floods caused by heavy rainfall. According to the agricultural association Coldiretti, the fruit harvest in the Adriatic region could be severely affected for the next four to five years, as the water left in the orchards has "suffocated" the roots of the plants, causing them to rot. Therefore, entire plantations would have to be planted out and then replanted, it said.

Livestock farming in the region has also been severely affected by the disaster. Around 250,000 cattle, pigs and sheep still need to be saved, Coldiretti says. The floods have already led to the death of thousands of animals. Landslides as a result of the storms make the situation even more difficult, as many farms are inaccessible. The animals there needed food and water.

Tourism in Italy: Closed roads and limited train traffic after severe weather

Holidaymakers who travel to Emilia-Romagna in the next few weeks are also likely to feel the consequences of the storms. Even though the trains between Bologna and Florence are running largely reliably again, according to media reports, train traffic is still suspended on many routes within Emilia-Romagna, for example between Faenza and Forlì. The ADAC also informs that there will be no trains between Rimini and Ferrara, between Ravenna and Faenza and between Ravenna and Castel Bolognese until further notice.

Landslides have destroyed the infrastructure in some areas.
