2023-05-24T20:29:52.462Z

Highlights: A tour of the Missionary Jungle is one of the seventeen proposals of The Natural Route, the program of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Nation that develops and promotes nature tourism. The tour involves connecting the strength of the Iguazu Falls with the magic of the jungle, meeting incredible animals and plants, crossing red dirt roads, Bathe in rivers and waterfalls, and discover villages and communities where surprising languages and traditions merge. It can be visited all year round and is highly recommended to go with the family. Much of the route is accessible to people with disabilities.

The Argentine tropics encompasses much more than the Iguazu Falls: it is the power of rivers and waterfalls, the diversity of animals and plants, the traditions of its peoples and communities. A proposal to continue knowing our country in depth.

A tour of the Missionary Jungle – one of the seventeen proposals of The Natural Route, the program of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Nation that develops and promotes nature tourism – involves connecting the strength of the Iguazu Falls with the magic of the jungle, meeting incredible animals and plants, crossing red dirt roads, Bathe in rivers and waterfalls, and discover villages and communities where surprising languages and traditions merge.

Touring Misiones is synonymous with meandering through the jungle.

Posadas and Puerto Iguazú are the main gateways. From there, you can connect to other destinations by car, bus or excursions.

The must-see Iguazu National Park and Iguazu Falls

The Iguazu National Park and the famous waterfalls are one of the great natural wonders of the planet. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, it is a place that must be visited at least once in a lifetime. It can be visited all year round and is highly recommended to go with the family. Much of the route is accessible to people with disabilities.

Yabotí Biosphere Reserve and Moconá Provincial Park

Near the town of El Soberbio, about four hours by car from the falls, there is a very picturesque region where the jungle, the farms, the Uruguay River and the influence of Brazil generate a unique identity. It is the great Yabotí Biosphere Reserve, which includes the Moconá Provincial Park and its incredible waterfalls parallel to the riverbed.

In the middle of the Devil's Throat, the calacantes take flight.

Salto Encantado Provincial Park

A reserve in the heart of Misiones that invites you to live the jungle and know one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the province. With good infrastructure, trails and viewpoints, it is ideal to visit for the day, trekking, go bird watching or simply enjoy its incredible landscapes. The towns of Aristóbulo del Valle and Villa Salto Encantado are the gateway to discover this and other nearby attractions.

Urugua-í and Andresito Provincial Park Well north of Misiones, you can visit one of the most beautiful and picturesque regions of the province, almost on the border with Brazil. The Urugua-í Provincial Park, 28 km from the town of Andresito, is the largest protected area in Misiones. It is just over an hour from Iguazu and has walking trails in the middle of the jungle, as well as a wild camping area. In the surroundings of Andresito, there are private nature reserves that offer accommodation and activities such as kayaking and biking, hiking, bird watching, among others.

Teyú Cuaré Provincial Park and House of Horacio Quiroga

Very close to the downtown area of the town of San Ignacio (famous for the Jesuit legacy) and just over an hour from Posadas, you can visit the Teyú Cuaré Provincial Park with incredible landscapes over the Paraná River and trails to explore the jungle. In addition, there is the House Museum of Horacio Quiroga, the writer who told the stories of the jungle like no one else.

Bird watching in the jungle is an experience of wonder.

Jesuit Missions of the Guarani San Ignacio and Santa Ana (the most preserved Jesuit reductions), along with Loreto and Santa María la Mayor, are testimonies of the life and social organization in the Jesuit Missions of the Guarani, founded in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In 1984, UNESCO declared them Cultural Heritage of Humanity. To visit them is to discover an important part of Argentine history.

Posadas

The capital of Misiones is a great gateway to explore all the attractions of the missionary jungle. It is a beautiful city on the banks of the Paraná River, which invites you to combine walks along its waterfront with cultural and gastronomic proposals.

When to go and where to sleep

It can be visited all year round, although from October to March it is usually hot, and from May to August, cooler, to the point that it is convenient to wear a coat. You must always have a raincoat at hand, because the rains are frequent and abundant. It is advisable to always find out before traveling the state of the accesses to some attractions with dirt road, because the rains can make them impassable. In protected natural areas, it is common for wild animals to cross the route. Therefore, if you travel by car, you must always respect the maximum speeds.

The ibirá pitá blooms in the summer and the yellow flowers stand out among the vegetation.

Posadas, Aristóbulo del Valle, El Soberbio and Puerto Iguazú are the most touristic cities with the greatest offer. In smaller towns, there is a more limited offer. To live a unique and different experience, jungle lodges offer accommodation in the middle of nature with all the comforts and services. Some protected areas have camping.
