On the way to the Hohenpeißenberg households, a lot of drinking water is lost. Save © costs and water DPA
For almost 17 years, Hohenpeißenberg has been getting its drinking water from Peiting. The community on the Hoher Peißenberg is struggling with high water loss. Now the problem is to be tackled with the help of a new leak detection device.
Hohenpeißenberg – "Unfortunately, our water loss is constantly high," said Hohenpeißenberg Mayor Thomas Dorsch at the municipal council meeting. In 2022, the water loss was about 41,000 cubic meters. Almost 17 years ago, the municipality of Hohenpeißenberg gave up its own water supply and has since obtained its drinking water from the neighbouring municipality of Peiting.
Water loss consistently high
The quality of the Peitingen water has always been good, this does not cause any problems for the people of Hohenpeißenberg - it is the amount of water that is lost on the way between Peiting and the connections in the Hohenpeißenberg apartments and houses that is worrying.
As the mayor explained at the meeting, there are always leaks in the pipe system through which the drinking water is pumped from Peiting to Hohenpeißenberg: "We have an old water network," Dorsch explained.
To counter the high level of water loss, the municipality has been using a correlator, a device that can locate leaks, for many years. But this is getting on in years. "We urgently need a new correlator," said the mayor in the municipal council. The device, which the municipality is currently using, is already 20 years old.
With a new device, money and water can be saved
Therefore, the municipal council dealt with the purchase of a new correlator. The new leak detector costs 13,107 euros, money that, according to Dorsch, is well invested. "With the new acquisition, a complete network test could be carried out," said Dorsch: "I would strongly recommend it." Hohenpeißenberg has a dedicated water warden who takes great care of the topic. "It's a good combination. We can save a lot – in costs and in water."
When Hohenpeißenberg was connected to the Peiting drinking water supply, it was agreed that Hohenpeißenberg would not pay for the water that arrives in the village, but for everything that leaves the market town of Peiting. "We pay for the loss of water," Dorsch said.
Water leaks are acoustically located
The correlator locates the water leaks acoustically by picking up the noise. The technology of the new devices is more mature than it was 20 years ago, said the mayor. The Hohenpeißenberg drinking water network would be continuously monitored.

In the event of burst water pipes, the municipality reacts immediately and, in the course of this repair work, regular checks are also carried out to see whether further broken pipe sections could be replaced. Since all costs in this area would have to be passed on to the fee payer on a one-to-one basis, all measures would be taken step by step.
The municipal council unanimously approved the purchase of the new leak detection device.
