When Donald Trump announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election, there was one name that jumped out as his obvious rival for the Republican nomination. Ron DeSantis, the current Governor of Florida, has had a meteoric rise in the party and has made a significant impact with conservative laws on immigration, sexual diversity and education on discrimination issues.
In 2017, when DeSantis had not yet announced his candidacy for governor, Trump launched a tweet of support that took off the campaign.
The first signs of conflict appeared in 2019, when DeSantis fired one of his advisers, Susie Wilies, blaming her for an email leak. Trump initially also excluded Wiles from his political team, but subsequently brought her back on board.
The 2022 midterm elections were a critical blow to the alliance. While many candidates supported by Trump suffered a defeat, DeSantis consolidated his state.
From that point on, the two Republicans have exchanged critical messages. In Trump's case, he has even singled out his rival as a child molester.
Given the expectation of the official announcement of DeSantis' candidacy for the White House, everything seems to indicate that this is just the beginning of the battle between the two Republican giants.
