Frankfurt/Berlin – The "Last Generation" movement has commented on the nationwide crackdown on its climate activists. At a press conference in Berlin's Reformation Church, Aimée van Baalen and Marion Fabian, both activists and spokespersons for the "Last Generation", made an official statement on the measures taken by the judiciary and police at noon on Wednesday (24 May). How hard has the climate movement been hit?

"They scare us": "Last Generation" spokeswoman describes the morning of the raid

According to van Baalen, there were 15 house searches against activists of the "Last Generation" in seven federal states on Wednesday morning. The spokeswoman explained that these "have hit all supporters of the 'Last Generation' hard, they scare us".

She describes the morning of the raid from her perspective: "I looked at my mobile phone while I was half asleep and found that some of my best friends were standing in front of police officers," while the officers searched the homes of the accused. One of the searched persons would therefore be called Imke.

The judiciary takes the website of the "Last Generation" offline – police search residential and business premises

According to the Augsburger Allgemeine, the searched persons and main accused include the "Last Generation" spokeswoman and co-founder Carla Hinrichs and the Augsburg mathematician Ingo Blechschmidt. Together, Hinrichs and Blechschmidt had operated the movement's website until the end, which "was taken offline today on the instructions of the judiciary," as van Baalen explained at the press conference. The seven defendants are between the ages of 22 and 38.

According to van Baalen, the raid was accompanied by the accusation that the "Last Generation" was a "criminal organization". The spokeswoman said that the raid would invoke Article 129 of the Criminal Code, i.e. the formation or support of terrorist groups. "Now he's being used against us," van Baalen said. The police officers searched both residential and business premises.

Raid on Last Generation: Communication channels and assets affected

Van Baalen also accused the judiciary of tapping the mobile phones of the accused. The e-mail distribution lists to the press were also affected by the "shotdown" of the raid against the "Last Generation", so that the activists could no longer access them at the moment.
