Munich/Berlin - On Wednesday (24 May) there was a raid against climate activists from the group "Last Generation" in seven German states. A total of 15 buildings were examined. The climate group's website was also blocked for a few hours, and in the meantime it was even described as a "criminal organization". Berlin's Senator for Justice, Felor Badenberg (independent), also commented on the raid. Green Party politician Renate Künast described her statements as "ramblings".

"Last Generation" Raid: Criminal Organization a Case-by-Case Decision

The searches were initiated by the Munich Public Prosecutor's Office. Four buildings were also searched in Berlin. The independent Justice Senator in Berlin, Felor Badenberg, said in the ARD Tagesthemen on Wednesday evening (24 May) that the form of protest of the "last generation" had changed in recent weeks. A new quality and quantity had been achieved, which had to be re-evaluated again and again.

When asked by the ARD presenter whether the "Last Generation" met the criteria of a criminal organization, Badenberg replied that it would always depend on the specific individual case. "It cannot be said that the 'Last Generation' in its entirety can be classified as a criminal organisation," said the Minister of Justice. The court would have to evaluate individual cases.

Berlin Senator on raid against "Last Generation" - Kuenast: "Most embarrassing interview of the day"

In Berlin, "people are coerced on a daily basis, by means of violence in the legal sense." Badenberg referred to people who would no longer be able to get to work on time, could no longer pick up their children on time, or even business people who would miss business appointments and have to bear financial losses. The senator finds it even more worrying that in some cases the police, fire brigade and ambulances "can no longer pass through the streets of Berlin unhindered." In some cases, ambulances carrying patients requiring urgent treatment would not arrive at the hospital until 26 minutes later.

The Green politician Renate Künast does not think much of the statements of the Senator of Justice. "The most embarrassing interview of the day was just the ramblings of the Senator of Justice Berlin in [the] daily topics on searches [of the 'Last Generation']," she wrote on Twitter. "Unbelievable understanding of work and naïve talk. Until the last grin," was Kuenast's verdict.

Going underground: "Decision that the 'last generation' has to make for itself"

The "last generation" must bear responsibility, Badenberg explained. Their task is to ensure an appropriate judiciary in Berlin within the scope of their possibilities. "For me, the framework is the penal code, which is ultimately an expression of a social consensus. Rules have been laid down that are essential for living together in a society," the non-party politician made clear. If these rules are not respected, these people would have to be held accountable.

However, Badenberg could not make it clear what the goal was. When asked whether the organization should be disbanded, imprisoned or go underground, she answered with her own goals. As Senator of Justice, she wants to make a contribution "to ensure law and order in the state of Berlin. Whether the 'Last Generation' has to go underground or something else is a decision that the 'Last Generation' has to make for itself," says Badenberg.

The climate group has already announced that it will not be intimidated by the raid. (vk)
