"Shop window resolution makes no sense": Peitingen municipal council makes clear decision

Instead, an alternative resolution penned by the mayor was passed by a large majority. A resolution has now been passed in the Peitingen municipal council. It is not yet clear what will happen to the Schongsau hospital, which is no longer a maternity ward due to a lack of staff. The city's emergency services also get help from the German government to cope with the crisis.

With their application for a resolution on the preservation of the Schongau hospital, the Independents Peitinger failed on Tuesday in the market town council. Instead, an alternative resolution penned by the mayor was passed by a large majority.

Peiting – "Actually, the application should not have to exist at all," said Christian Lory (Independent Peitinger). After all, the referendum had clearly shown that the citizens were in favour of preserving the Schongau hospital. "But if you look at what has happened since then, it is probably necessary," he stressed.

The concern about a possible closure is great among the population. In the meantime, children are already being born in the parking lot because there is no longer a maternity ward. "We therefore demand the expansion of the Schongau hospital to level two with a maternity ward as a clear signal to the district council, district administrator and supervisory board."

In the run-up to the meeting, it was eagerly awaited how Mayor Peter Ostenrieder, who as a district councillor and supervisory board member of the hospital GmbH is directly involved in the decisions relating to the situation of the clinics, would position himself. Neither the supervisory board nor the district council would speak of a possible closure of the Schongau hospital, Ostenrieder made clear.

Mayor Peter Ostenrieder speaks of a "shop window resolution"

It is "complete nonsense" when it is said that the Schongau clinic is "deliberately driven to the wall". Rather, it is important to everyone that health care in Schongau is maintained, "that also applies to me". The mayor referred to the recent district council decision, which takes exactly this into account.

After all, it provides for a concept to ensure clinical care in the district with clinic locations in Weilheim and Schongau, each with emergency care, to be developed. "A shop window resolution makes no sense in my eyes." If so, it must also be feasible.

Ostenrieder therefore pleaded for an alternative variant, which he presented to the panel. The demand to the district council was "to assess the importance of the Schongau site for health care in the western district even more sensitively in all future decisions and at the same time to offer the financially, medically and personnel-wise feasible services at the Schongau site for the future if possible". The company thus stands for a strong Schongau location, "in whatever role".

But that wasn't concrete enough for Lory. They don't want "just any role", but a hospital at level 2, because only then can obstetrics be implemented. But such a conversion to a focus supplier is not feasible, Ostenrieder countered. Not even the Action Alliance would demand it.

It was doubtful whether Weilheim would even be eligible for this, Marion Gillinger (ÖDP) also saw little chance of success here. Herbert Salzmann (SPD) even attested to Lory's "loss of reality". Such a demand is simply wrong and would certainly be rejected by the majority of citizens in the district.

"For us, it's about Schongau. From. Point. End."

Alex Zila (Independent) then jumped in to join his group colleague. One does not depend on an expansion to Level 2, as long as emergency care and a maternity ward on site are also secured independently. Zila criticized the fact that Ostenrieder's resolution did not make any statements about this. "For us, it's not about two locations, but about Schongau. From. Point. End."

Ostenrieder recalled that obstetrics had to be shut down due to a lack of staff, and that this problem could not simply be solved by resolution. The fact that "such a drama" was created with the birth in the parking lot in Oberhausen annoyed the mayor. The family would not have arrived in Schongau in time either, "the child would probably have been born at the parking lot of Tannen Geiß". Whatever is forgotten in the discussion is that only a fraction of pregnant women in Schongau have given birth anyway. "The trend is towards hospitals with children's clinics, which we can't get in Schongau."

As a politician, you can discuss as you like, but you can't get past these facts, Salzmann agreed with the head of the town hall. Doctors who want to work as affiliated doctors are rare, and the safety needs of pregnant women are growing. "The world has changed in this regard." Stephan Walter (CSU) also called for realities to be acknowledged and not just populist demands.

Don't lose sight of your financial situation

Claudia Steindorf (SPD) said that one should not lose sight of the financial situation with regard to the district levy. Affordable health care is needed, "I don't see it as location-related." She called for a return to an objective discussion, and she would also like to see a de-escalation from the Action Alliance.

Gunnar Prielmeier (SPD) agreed. "Think of the employees, they are afraid," said the second mayor, who himself works at the Schongau hospital. Hermann Mödl (BVP) also found it important that basic services are maintained in Schongau. In the past, many patients went to other clinics with plannable surgeries. "Now that the closure is an issue, everyone is screaming."

Not only Norbert Merk (CSU) emphasized that the municipal council was not responsible in terms of hospitals, in the end one could only make an appeal. But it is precisely this signal effect that the Peitinger would expect, emphasized Tobias Eding (SPD). "The citizens want to hear that the Schongau hospital is important for us." He therefore thinks the application of the independents is good.

But in the vote that followed, only five councillors raised their hands in favour of the resolution. The vast majority votes in favour of the alternative proposed by Ostenrieder.
