"Significantly more time": Commissioning of new signal box at Ostbahnhof is massively delayed

2023-05-25T10:40:46.259Z

Highlights: The railway wanted to put the new electronic interlocking at the Ostbahnhof into operation in June of this year. But nothing will come of it, the railway now had to concede contritely. Numerous signals would also have to be set up and connected first. However, there is a "thin staffing level" for this. There is a lack of plan and acceptance inspectors. Now, commuters will have to live with many disruptions on the S-Bahn main line for at least a good year.

Munich - The old signal box at Ostbahnhof is not to be replaced by a new system until August 2024. This was explained by Kai Kruschinski, project manager for the 2nd main line, today, Thursday. "It has now become apparent that we need significantly more time for commissioning than initially assumed."

Munich: Commissioning of new East signal box delayed by a whole year

One of the reasons for this is that the railway is still 400 kilometres (!) cables. Numerous signals would also have to be set up and connected first. "This is followed by intensive tests as well as inspections and acceptance processes." However, there is a "thin staffing level" for this. There is a lack of plan and acceptance inspectors.

Originally, the new signal box was supposed to go into operation in June 2023 - this was said at an on-site appointment for the start of construction, which was also attended by Prime Minister Markus Söder and the then DB Infrastructure Board Member Ronald Pofalla. Now, however, commuters will have to live with many disruptions on the S-Bahn main line caused by the old signal box for at least a good year.
