"Standing by citizens in their word": Municipalities on Lake Tegernsee want to quickly implement indoor swimming pool promises

2023-05-25T16:20:16.918Z

Highlights: Tegernsee Valley municipalities have taken further steps towards realization of a new indoor swimming pool. An inter-municipal working group (AG) was founded – consisting of the five mayors of the valley and nine members of the respective municipal councils. A feasibility study was commissioned for the envisaged indoor pool. The working group has also agreed that the new indoor pool should be built at its original location next to the Wiessee iodine-sulfur bath - i.e. where huge piles of rubble from the demolition of the bathing park are currently piling up.

The desire for a new indoor swimming pool is great in the Tegernsee Valley. Now the municipalities have taken further steps towards realization. It is also clear that only the Badepark property can be considered as a location.

Tegernsee Valley – The construction and operation of a new indoor swimming pool is only conceivable as a joint effort of all valley communities. Bad Wiessee had made this much clear in the summer of 2022. As a result, an inter-municipal working group (AG) was founded – consisting of the five mayors of the valley and nine members of the respective municipal councils. "The aim of this is to put a new indoor swimming pool in the Tegernsee Valley into operation as soon as possible," according to a joint press release issued by the working group on Thursday (25 May). On the way there, there are now first concrete steps to report.

Consulting firm to accompany the process of the valley communities

According to the press release, the working group has decided to have the "challenging process" moderated by a municipal consulting firm specializing in such projects. At the same time, a feasibility study was commissioned for the envisaged indoor swimming pool. The mayor of Wiessee and chairman of the AG, Robert Kühn (SPD), makes it clear when asked: "We don't want to lose any time."

Valley municipalities also want to get Waakirchen and Warngau on board

The fact that the now demolished bathing park in the heart of the Wiessee spa district is sorely missed is something that everyone involved – first and foremost the mayors – is "well aware", it is said. In order to distribute the burden of a new indoor swimming pool for the approximately 25,000 citizens of the Tegernsee Valley on even more shoulders, the mayors also approached the municipalities of Waakirchen and Warngau and asked them to accompany the process. "There is no final commitment yet." However, the municipality of Waakirchen has agreed to contribute to the costs of the feasibility study, according to the press release.

As a result, the working group has also agreed that the new indoor swimming pool should be built again at its original location next to the Wiessee iodine-sulfur bath - i.e. where huge piles of rubble from the demolition of the bathing park are currently piling up. "We have also examined all other options," says Kühn. In terms of infrastructure and development, however, no other location is an option. In any case, the schedule benefits from the decision in favor of the bathing park area: A corresponding development plan is already available on the property - "this saves many months of procedural time," the working group says. It is now necessary to "create an ambitious framework schedule".

Meeting of the working group "characterized by a high degree of objectivity"

What exactly such a schedule could look like, Kühn did not want to comment on Thursday in more detail. "We now have to wait for the feasibility study," says the mayor. Then one step after the other would be taken quickly. In its press release, the working group states: "All members of the working group feel the pressure to build a new indoor swimming pool very clearly. The cooperation is correspondingly harmonious." Kühn confirms this: The meetings were characterized by a "high level of objectivity and goal-oriented discussions".

A decision has yet to be made on financing and the form of the company

Despite all the agreement, however, there are still many important decisions to be made together – keywords "financing" and "corporate form". "The municipalities have different levels of funding," the press release says. It is therefore necessary to act carefully in order not to create any disadvantages. The AG cites a numerical example given by the commissioned consulting firm: According to this, only 25 percent of the costs over the entire term of such a pool are construction costs. 75 percent are operating and maintenance costs. In view of the cooperation so far, Kühn is nevertheless convinced: "If the process continues like this, it will be a prime example of inter-municipal cooperation that has never been seen before in the Tegernsee Valley."

Finally, the working group, which now also includes Waakirchen's mayor Norbert Kerkel (FWG), explains that when it comes to "municipal swimming", the citizens are keeping their word: "We know that and this is how we will act," the mayors are quoted as saying in the press release.
