Delegation from the Oberland in Berlin: Discussion on wolves and combined husbandry

Highlights: A delegation from the Oberland region travelled to Berlin to make their perspective on the topics of combined husbandry and wolves clear. The group was led by the Almwirtschaftliche Verein Oberbayern with its chairman Sepp Glatz. The general belief is that the wolf cannot coexist with agriculture in the Alps and cannot be kept in check in the mountains. Without pastures, alpine pastures would become overgrown and the Alps would lose an important ecosystem.

District – A delegation from the Oberland region travelled to Berlin to make their perspective on the topics of combined husbandry and wolves clear.

A delegation of farmers, animal rights activists, nature conservation authorities and district administrators from the districts of Miesbach, Garmisch and Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen recently sent a strong signal. The group was led by the Almwirtschaftliche Verein Oberbayern with its chairman Sepp Glatz. Third District Administrator Josef Bierschneider, Sepp Faas from the Lower Nature Conservation Authority, Johanna Ecker-Schotte from the Tegernsee Valley Animal Welfare Association, district farmer Brigitta Regauer and Miesbach member of the Bundestag Karl Bär had travelled to the Bundestag from Miesbach.

According to the press release, the Upper Bavarian delegation wanted to bring the two ministries of environment and agriculture closer to the special features of local agriculture and "convey clear impressions from practice" on the two controversial topics of wolves and combined husbandry.

Wolf could not live in coexistence with agriculture in the Alps

The general belief is that the wolf cannot coexist with agriculture in the Alps and cannot be kept in check in the mountains. In the "wolf debate", it is above all crucial to point out the importance of grazing for the cultural landscape. Without pastures, alpine pastures would become overgrown and the Alps would lose an important ecosystem. The unanimous opinion: A broad reintroduction of the wolf would be an attack on species and nature conservation.

Tethering: Think about small businesses

On the subject of tethering, the delegation was also concerned with maintaining the existing structures. She pleaded to fight for the implementation of political requirements for small businesses. Otherwise, the death of farms will be "rapidly fueled". For many farmers in the region, the continuation of combined farming is necessary. "The model of semi-annual tethering in the barn with a lot of free-range in summer is absolutely animal-friendly and not easy to lump together with other types of tethering," says the delegation. Member of the Bundestag Alexander Radwan: "In the case of both major issues, the special features of the Alpine districts must be clearly worked out and the conflicting goals must also be pointed out".
