Russian and Belarusian defense ministers Sergei Shoigu and Viktor Kharnin have signed a document allowing the transfer and deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons to Belarusian territory, Russia's state news agency TASS reported today.
According to the report, Russia will be able to deploy launch units of tactical nuclear weapons, i.e., nuclear weapons intended for use on the battlefield. The news agency did not specify which weapons were involved, but the Russian military has the possibility of using tactical nuclear weapons launched from short-range planes and ballistic missiles.
According to the news agency, the Russian army will remain in full control of the weapons and the decision to use them will remain in its hands alone. Defense Minister Shoigu referred to the war in Ukraine during the meeting, claiming that "the West is waging a secret war against Russia and Belarus."

Meanwhile, Russia claimed to have captured several Ukrainian military sappers who planned to hit power lines that provide backup electricity to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The Russian claims come a day after additional photos proving that the Russian military is using the nuclear plant as a logistics center were posted on social media.
