Around 500 people demonstrated in front of the Vaterstetten town hall for better childcare in the village. Mayor Spitzauer has to fight for the floor.

Vaterstetten – "It stinks to us, our children need care!" – this was the motto of a protest action called by parents' councils of the Vaterstetten childcare facilities. According to the police, around 500 people – children, parents and grandparents – gathered in front of the town hall on Wednesday evening and vented their displeasure with whistles and posters.

"Mom, Dad, can I go to kindergarten tomorrow?" it read, or "Does Vaterstetten make it attractive for educators," "Educator instead of community park," or "Kita: Come in and burn out."

Organizer: Vaterstetten is worse off than others

"We need better working conditions, sufficient childcare places, appropriate opening hours and appreciative pay," demanded Kerstin Lottritz as a representative of the demonstration organizers. In local competition, Vaterstetten is worse off than some neighboring towns, which have already provided allowances and affordable housing for educators. "Childcare is a mandatory task of the municipality, which must create better conditions so that educators enjoy working here."

Currently, the situation is characterized by emergency care, reduced opening hours and completely closed groups. "The children are insecure and the parents are on the verge of resilience," says Lottritz. Ultimately, good childcare is also a benefit for the entire community, because parents who cannot go to work because of the care of their children cause a lack of income tax and a shortage of staff in other departments: "The shortage of educators affects everyone in society."

Association calls for higher staffing ratio

Lorna Stephen from the Association of Daycare Professionals in Bavaria reported on the everyday work of kindergarten teachers and called on politicians to have a higher staffing ratio, which would take into account (un)expected absences due to vacation or illness from the outset. She wished for her association to be heard more than a voice from the field.

When Vaterstetten's mayor Leonhard Spitzauer wanted to take the floor afterwards, a verbal scuffle ensued because Lottritz did not want to give him the microphone. It was only after a heated discussion that the head of the community managed to prevail.

Mayor endorses Munich allowance

He is well aware that the community has a "big problem" here. "The goal is clear, but it is not only in our hands, but also in that of the wearers." He pointed out that the two largest providers of Vaterstetten's care facilities did not yet pay a conurbation allowance, in contrast to other providers. Spitzauer himself was in favour of a Munich allowance and announced that he himself would be prepared to make a great financial commitment, but would need the okay of the municipal council to do so. "And we have to think about where the money is going to come from. Good pedagogy costs money, and the municipality cannot do it alone." However, ideas have already been developed, which the municipality wants to discuss with parents and sponsors at a round table on June 12 in order to work together on solutions.
