Rush expected at the airport - passengers are threatened with chaos on arrival due to S-Bahn closure

2023-05-25T11:09:39.541Z

Highlights: The S-Bahn main line in Munich is partially closed on the first Whitsun weekend. Holidaymakers may therefore have problems getting to Munich Airport. This is due to maintenance work and work on the Ostbahnhof electronic interlocking. The restrictions on the S8 in the direction of Herrsching do not stop at the Leuchtenbergring. The trains start / end at Munich Central Station main hall track 20-26 and run without intermediate stops and only every 30 minutes.

Ironically, on the first Whitsun weekend, the S-Bahn main line in Munich is partially closed. Holidaymakers must therefore expect restrictions.

Munich - The Pentecost holidays are just around the corner. For many people in the Free State of Bavaria, this means going on holiday. In addition to full trains and highways, Munich Airport also expects up to two million passengers in the coming wave of travel, according to its own information. "For the period from May 26 to June 11 inclusive, almost 15,000 flights to over 200 destinations are planned, according to the airlines' registrations so far," the airport says.

But exactly at the upcoming travel time, the main line of the S-Bahn in Munich is closed. For many holidaymakers who want to take the S1 or S8 to the airport, this is an obstacle that could cause stress. The S-Bahn Munich writes in a preliminary information that from Friday, May 26 to Tuesday, May 30, from 22:30 p.m. to 04:40 a.m., a section will be completely impassable.

Munich trunk line partially closed: section between Ostbahnhof and Pasing affected

More precisely, it is about the section between Ostbahnhof and Pasing as well as tracks one to five at Ostbahnhof. This is due to maintenance work and work on the Ostbahnhof electronic interlocking. "There is a rail replacement service between Munich Ostbahnhof and Pasing," says the S-Bahn.

According to the S-Bahn, there is a rail replacement service between Ostbahnhof and Pasing, but some holidaymakers still have to resort to alternative means of transport. This could lead to problems for some people who either land with the last planes in the late evening or take off with the first planes in the morning for their vacation. For example, the two Condor flights to Palma de Mallorca and Corfu on May 26 are affected. They are both scheduled to take off at 05:50 a.m. In the evening, for example, it hits the TAP flight from Lisbon, which arrives in Munich at 23.30 p.m., also on 26 May.

The specific changes according to the Munich S-Bahn are summarized in the following list.

  • The restrictions on the S8 in the direction of Herrsching/Flughafen: Line S 8 in the direction of the airport will be diverted between Pasing and Ostbahnhof Fernbahn (Gl. 6-13) via the Südring, the stops Laim to Rosenheimer Platz and Leuchtenbergring will be omitted.
The line S 8 in the direction of Herrsching does not stop at the Leuchtenbergring, runs from Ostbahnhof (Eq. 6-13) via the Südring without stopping to Pasing (Eq. 2-4) and on in the direction of Herrsching. The stops Rosenheimer Platz to Laim are omitted.
  • The restrictions on the S1 in the direction of Freising/Airport: The trains start / end at Munich Central Station main hall track 20-26 and run between Munich Central Station and Moosach without intermediate stops and only every 30 minutes.

Munich trunk line closed: Holidaymakers have to put up with SEV

At the request of tz.de of IPPEN. MEDIA, Munich Airport refers to alternative means of transport, such as the Lufthansa Express Bus, Flixbus or the regional train to Freising and the subsequent airport bus. But there's a catch. The means of transport mentioned do not run at the times when they would be relevant for holidaymakers in exactly this period. In other words, people will ultimately have to hold on to the S-Bahn and accept the SEV, which runs between Ostbahnhof and Pasing. (ly)
