Surprise at "Bares für Rares": An unloved horse figure turned out to be a real treasure on the popular ZDF show. The seller's desired price was far from sufficient.
Cologne – In the new edition of the popular ZDF junk show "Bares für Rares" with Horst Lichter (61), viewers got to see a special horse on Monday (22 May). The service employee Hubert Zinnall (70) wanted to get rid of his bronze figure. But the 70-year-old had more than underestimated his value.
"Cash for Rares": Woman did not want the horse
Zinnall received the bronze horse figure as a gift from his parents-in-law, he says in the new issue. But his wife was anything but thrilled. "There's no way that's coming into my house," she told him unequivocally. That's why the 70-year-old tries his luck at "Bares für Rares".
"What a beautiful horse," explains presenter Horst Lichter. "It almost looks like a portrait of a horse." The expert Colmar Schulte-Goltz (49) also seems to be enthusiastic about the figure. But Zinnall has "no idea" how much the horse is worth. "100 euros would be very nice," he says. I wonder if he didn't misjudge it...
A famous animal sculptor
Schulte-Goltz recognizes colonial France in the 19th century in the setting consisting of a horse and a palm tree. The signature is by the French sculptor Pierre-Jules Mêne. "This was one of the most famous animal sculptors of the 19th century in France," explains the expert. He was very well known there.

However, Schulte-Goltz could not find a foundry stamp, "a pity", according to "Bares für Rares" presenter Horst Lichter. "This suggests that it is not a lifetime casting of Mêne, but a postumer casting." Nevertheless, the expert would estimate the year of origin around 1900. "But even then, Mêne had been dead for over 20 years."
The design could be dated to 1877. At the back of the horse there is a "not very nice injury", which of course pushes the value down a bit. Nevertheless, the estimated value clearly exceeds the desired price: the horse should bring 1,000 to 1,200 euros in the end. "How lucky that the woman didn't want it," said Lichter.

My Area
Big win for the seller
In the dealer's room, the damaged area is immediately noticeable, but there is still great interest in the stately horse. The whole thing quickly picks up speed, Julian Schmitz-Avila (36) starts with 400 euros. After a back and forth, it finally goes to him – for 1,000 euros. "Totally good, go home happy," says the 70-year-old.
