In the Ukrainian Armed Forces, special forces are crystallizing, which will be part of the counteroffensive against the Russian army. Four examples.

Munich/Luhansk/Zaporizhzhia - These are tough words. "It will get worse," Major General Kyrylo Budanov said in a Telegram video message addressed to Russian soldiers: "You have the choice to die or save your life."

Ukraine war: Kyiv unveils special forces for counteroffensive

Budanov is the head of Ukraine's military intelligence service and recently admitted to assassinations against Russian propagandists. In his role, the 37-year-old is not insignificantly involved in the planning for the Ukrainian counteroffensive. And to stir up trouble with his people in territories occupied by Moscow. And even in Russia itself?

In the Russian border region of Belgorod, suspected partisans are causing a stir, while in the neighboring Russian oblast of Bryansk, military helicopters and Su fighter jets were apparently brought down, and fuel depots exploded on the annexed Crimean peninsula. In this situation, Kyiv's special forces, which are now supposed to cause real problems for Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin's invading army in the Ukraine war, are becoming more tangible. Our editors give four examples.

Counteroffensive of the Ukrainian army: 28th mechanized brigade

The 28th Mechanized Brigade was originally stationed in the Black Sea port of Odessa to prevent a possible amphibious assault on the city of almost one million inhabitants when the Russian invasion began. Instead, according to the Kyiv Post, the brigade fought for Kherson and finally stopped the Russian advance in the spring of 2022 near Mykolaiv, where it is still fighting today.

According to the report, the brigade commander was killed in fighting in July. Nevertheless, according to the Kyiv Post, the 28th should play a central role in the expected counteroffensive in the south in the direction of Zaporizhzhia because of its experience. Or is it already advancing? In recent days, for example, more explosions have been reported near Tokmak in the south of the Zaporizhzhia region.

Counteroffensive of the Ukrainian army: 82nd Airborne Assault Brigade

The Kyiv Post cites the recently leaked Pentagon documents that the 82nd Airborne Assault Brigade is "the strongest single formation likely to be involved in the offensive." According to the leaked US documents, the Ukrainian command plans to unite about half of its NATO-supplied infantry fighting vehicles in this brigade, the newspaper writes.

To put this into perspective: infantry fighting vehicles are used to transport infantry under their own fire directly into battle. Specifically, there are 40 German Marder tanks and 90 U.S. Stryker wheeled tanks. The Western armored vehicles have automatic automatic cannons and night sensors. The infantry fighting vehicles for the infantry, in conjunction with the main battle tanks and artillery in the hinterland, are essential for a militarily successful counteroffensive.

Counteroffensive of the Ukrainian army: 47th separate mechanized brigade "Magura"

There are assessments that the counter-strike could be carried out in a kind of pincer movement. In the south with thrust towards Zaporizhzhia and coming from the northeast in the direction of Luhansk in the east not far from the Russian border. Among other things, Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin had recently warned Moscow of a possible encirclement of Russian troops near Bakhmut.

There, in the middle of the Donbass, according to the Kyiv Post, the soldiers of the 47th mechanized brigade "Magura" are currently fighting. Said soldiers come from Kiev, Dnipro, Odessa and Lviv. It is said to be the first Ukrainian battle formation to receive foreign battle tanks. With these main battle tanks, the Ukrainian armed forces want to operate offensively in the flat plains of Donbass, where the counteroffensive was recently postponed due to the rainy season.

Counteroffensive of the Ukrainian army: 73rd Naval Center for Special Operations

Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky officially announced the creation of his own Marine Corps, similar to the one in the United States. According to the Kyiv Post, the already existing 73rd Naval Special Operations Center is "a training unit with a mission to train combat divers and soldiers who have a mission similar to that of the US Navy Seals."

In the course of the war, a unit for specialized boat and amphibious attacks developed, which is "often deployed behind the Russian lines in the Dnipro Delta." That is, behind the huge Dnieper River, which runs through the country to the Black Sea. According to the report, the 73rd Brigade is already on occupied territory for reconnaissance missions on the Black Sea peninsula of Kinburn, south of Mykolaiv. To prepare an advance on Melitopol?
