A 43-year-old man with a serious lung disease has received a heart transplant and delivered his healthy and young heart to a 51-year-old woman in a complicated double operation successfully performed at the Molinette Hospital in Turin, northern Italy.

The "domino" transplant, a practice that had not been performed in Italy for three decades, was carried out several days ago but the medical center said Thursday that the surgery had been successfully completed and the health of both patients is progressing well.

"Currently, the two patients are improving and their course appears regular, which gives hope that they can fully enjoy this beautiful 'gift,'" the hospital said in a statement.

The man suffered from "Young syndrome", a "serious pulmonary pathology" that required an associated transplant of the two lungs and the heart, since the size of the left chest showed a serious discrepancy with that of the right.

The only possible solution for this patient was to replace the entire cardio-pulmonary block, but while the lungs were deeply damaged, the heart was healthy and young, so they had to avoid "waste" it, the hospital said.

Double operation

Thus, after an intense search to find a donor, the Molinette team in Turin found one in Rome and urgently organized an operation for the patient, who was admitted to intensive care due to the worsening of his health in recent months.

At the same time, the cardiac surgery department of the Molinette in Turin found a candidate to receive that healthy heart, a 51-year-old woman, suffering from Biventricular Arrhythmogenic Dysplasia, who needed an urgent transplant.

The double operation was successfully performed at the Molinette Hospital in Turin, Italy.

The operation, performed by doctors Mauro Rinald and Massimo Boffini, lasted more than 10 hours and was especially complex, as it was extremely important to avoid damaging the man's heart during the organ transfer.

"The paths of three people cross for a moment with the passage of a special witness: the donor gives his cardiopulmonary block to a patient who receives it and, in turn, gives his 'discarded' heart to a second patient," the medical center summarized.
