A two-year-old toddler accidentally shot and killed himself after finding a gun on the couch of his family's home in Michigan in the United States.
The spouse of the toddler's mother was charged with involuntary manslaughter. Marcus Nevilles Jr., 22, objected to the charges at a court hearing. He told police he was "high" on cannabis and was busy on his phone when the shooting happened, according to court documents.
"I don't get it. I try to understand how they say it's my fault. I didn't shoot and kill him," he said in court.
Clary McCoy apparently found the gun in a Kentwood, Michigan home, and shot himself on Friday night. "It sounds like a terrible accident, and there's no criminal intent here," defense attorney Richard Zambon said.
In 2024, stricter gun laws will take effect in Michigan. Gun owners will need to keep it locked in a box in case there are children in the light, and anyone who wants to purchase a gun will have to go through a background check.
