"Don't live the way we should live": Resistance to wind energy subsides

2023-05-26T12:49:56.800Z

Highlights: Wind turbines are attracting great interest in the market town of Glonn. The economically positive experience with the wind turbine in Hamberg in the neighbouring municipality of Bruck whets the appetite for a separate citizen system. The amount of space required is much lower than generating about the same amount of electricity through biogas plants or photovoltaics. A company has not yet been founded and only the information stage has yet been reached at the other locations. The expected wind speeds here are between 5.5 and 5.3 meters per second.

The construction of a wind turbine or even several is now attracting great interest in the municipality of Glonn. Now possible locations have been named.

Glonn – There are still a lot of unanswered questions. But one thing is certain: the topic of wind energy moves the people of Glonn. That's why about 100 visitors came to an information event of the Aktionskreis Energiewende in the parish hall on Thursday evening. The economically positive experience with the wind turbine in Hamberg in the neighbouring municipality of Bruck obviously whets the appetite for a separate citizen system.

On this evening, however, doers and doubters also faced each other. Also on board: Werner Stinauer from the Bruck-based operating company Osterkling GmbH, who gave a simple answer to complicated questions from citizens: "It has to be economical, otherwise no one will build it." However, there are entrepreneurial risks associated with wind turbine projects. And they are big, especially at the beginning.

Four plants could supply all Glonner

The evening was moderated by Berthold Färber, information was provided by consultant Lea Steiner, Glonn municipal councillor Fritz Gerneth (Greens) and Hans Gröbmayr, chairman of the Energy Transition Action Group, who warned right at the beginning: "We live the way we shouldn't live." Due to global warming, there would be "many more heat deaths than corona deaths" worldwide, he warned, adding: "Without wind turbines, neither Glonn nor Bavaria will be able to meet its energy needs in the future." His solution: Four plants would be enough to supply the 5200 citizens of Glonn. Advantage: Purchasing power remains local. The amount of space required is much lower than generating about the same amount of electricity through biogas plants or photovoltaics.

What followed was an exchange of well-known arguments, which, of course, also contained logical fuzziness for some fundamental opponents, namely when the low water level in Lake Garda was a dramatic consequence of climate change, while the wet and much too cold spring in Upper Bavaria was described as a pure weather phenomenon. "That's nonsense," said one visitor. On the other hand, the fact that a wind turbine provides a climate protection performance that is 1000 times higher than if the forest cut down for it had remained standing remained unchallenged.

According to the specifications of the state government, about 400 wind turbines are targeted and necessary in the vicinity of Munich. Currently, municipalities are reporting potential locations. In Glonn, there are already several private initiatives to build their own wind turbines. Stinauer contributed practical tips from his experiences, which he lived through and also suffered through in the first approval procedure in the district of Ebersberg.

In these places, there are considerations for wind turbines

In Glonn there are several approaches in the area between Schlacht and Oberpframmern as well as near Kreuz, Lindach and Kastenseeon. The expected wind speeds here are between 5.5 and 5.3 meters per second. "The municipal council has not yet made a decision," informed the Green Gerneth. However, the consensus is that "we don't want to have big investors." Karl Schweisfurth from Herrmannsdorfer Landwerkstätten is also flirting with the idea of building a wind turbine. "We will pay the costs for the nature conservation report," he says in advance. In January, three information events had already taken place, in which a total of about 100 people participated. A company has not yet been founded and only the information stage has yet been reached at the other locations. "There is still a massive need for coordination," said moderator Färber. The question of the disposal concept comes up again and again and so it was on this evening. "This is still being worked on," Steiner admitted. "But I always wonder where the nuclear waste goes." For this there was the first spontaneous applause of the evening.

Stinauer reported that the disposal costs for the wind turbine in Bruck, if it were to become obsolete in decades, were calculated to cost 250,000 euros. Nevertheless, doubts about the profitability remained with some of the visitors. On the other hand, it could be seen from the questions asked that the yields to be achieved aroused interest.

Gröbmayr had a nice anecdote in store about the time required to build a wind turbine. A delegation from Uganda was eager to go on an excursion to the Bruck wind turbine. Once there, the question was how long the approval phase and how long the actual construction of the plant had taken. Gröbmayr said: "Five years for the permit and three months for the construction." The response from the visitors from Africa came promptly: "For us, it would be the other way around."
