Rocklin, California – An accident has occurred on a busy road in California. While trying to save a family of ducks from the road, a family man himself was hit by a car. He paid for his love of animals with his life. A twelve-year-old witness described the events.
After duck accident in California: Young witness describes rescue attempt – "Everyone applauded"
Twelve-year-old William takes a deep breath and falters again and again when he tells the US broadcaster KCRA3 about the events at the intersection of Stanford Ranch Road in Rocklin. He witnessed the accident live, sitting just a few meters away in his mother's car when the duck rescuer was hit. The father of the family did not survive the accident.
According to US media and the boy, the ducks were on the busy road around 20 p.m. – a mother duck and her chicks. The little ducks in particular apparently had problems crossing the road, says the twelve-year-old. The man got out of the car and chased the ducks steadily towards the pedestrian path and the flowers and bushes that bloomed there on the side of the road. "Everyone applauded. He was so nice," the young witness recalls.

William's mother turned down the window, shouted "well done, well done" to the animal lover. "I also said 'well done' to him," William said. He swallows, falters briefly. "And then, shortly after...", he begins. He didn't see the car, it came out of nowhere. "All I remember is the sound and how it flew over the intersection," the boy said. His little sister was also in the car, but was less noticeable in the back seat. She focused on the ducks that keep getting lost on the streets of big cities.
The man's children are also said to have been sitting at the scene of the accident in the parked car at the intersection when the car hit their father. The driver, a 17-year-old girl, remained at the scene of the accident and cooperated with police, cbsnews reports. It is still unclear exactly how the accident occurred. The course of events is still being reconstructed. Drunk driving is ruled out by the police.

After the accident, the people of Rocklin mourn the loss of the brave animal lover. Flowers and plastic ducks were placed at the scene of the accident. William, too, wants people to remember the duck rescuer, who was the only one who got out to help. He says: "He was probably the nicest person in the whole area. It's not fair."
