The municipality lives up to its nickname "Dönerzell": In the station kiosk, which has been empty for months, a new shop with a rotating meat skewer is opening, the third in a confined space. It starts on June 1st. Meanwhile, the competition has mixed feelings.

Gröbenzell – It has now been five years since local councillors from the UWG, Greens, SPD and FDP informed about the plans of Deutsche Bahn (DB) at a joint stand at the station: Their call "Gröbenzell does not need a third kebab shop in the town centre, but a sales outlet for tickets, travel supplies and press articles". In the end, around 100 citizens voted for the kebab boycott.

By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular FFB Newsletter.)

The result is known: The kebab snack bar "afiyet" came in May 2018 and then left Kirchenstraße 1 again in November 2022. The operator had given up for private reasons, said a DB spokesman on Tagblatt request.

Long search for a tenant

He also announced that "the kiosk at the Gröbenzell station" was rented out again: "The opening is planned for June 1st. This will be a concept with snacks and kebabs." Unfortunately, the search for a new tenant took a long time, as no suitable applicant was found at first.

"One possible reason could be that there is also a large offer in Gröbenzell outside the station," speculated the railway spokesman, who did not want to comment on further details of the contract. Again and again, however, it is brought to the Tagblatt from informed sources that the rent that the railway takes is quite high, and that many fail because of it.

Sparse information on the new, old use of the premises was also available from the town hall, where reference was made to the responsibility of Deutsche Bahn.

When asked whether the municipality was considering leasing the kiosk itself in order to be able to decide for itself how it would be used and by whom, they replied: "Yes, there were. But these have not yet come to fruition. Currently, the building is designated as a kiosk or for travel needs." There was no request for any other use. And: "It is not in the influence of the municipality who settles where. If something is approvable, it must be approved."

Rotisserie axis is complete again

With the new "Döneria" – according to the dictionary, the term refers to a kebab snack bar that uses the analogies of cafeteria and pizzeria – the "rotisserie axis is complete again," writes a user on Facebook: "Good luck, Hombres!" Because kebab skewers are already spinning in the immediate vicinity, the nickname "Dönerzell", which has been rampant for some time, is receiving new food.

Ibrahim Ali, managing director of the "Ariana Pizza Haus", could have imagined the kiosk to be more like a beverage market or a shop with coffee to go. He also offers kebabs in his snack bar – which has been at Bahnhofstraße 2 for ten months: "We have our clientele. But three kebab shops so close to each other, that's very bad and unnecessary."

In the "Döner Paradies" at Kirchenstraße 13, people take note of it in a more relaxed way - there is even a wooden board with the burnt-in name "Dönerzell" on the shelf. The Burumkaya family – aunt, nephew, niece – had taken over the store, which had long since been established in Gröbenzell, two years ago and is facing the new competition calmly. "We don't mind. People know us here, and we have our regular customers!"
