Inclusive housing was born about ten years ago. The idea is that everyone has their own private space, while sharing common living spaces with their neighbors to avoid loneliness. These programs with various names (shared habitats, grouped habitats, beguinages...) are still few in number. But the actions taken by the public authorities should promote its development.
Inclusive housing was recognized by the Élan law of 23 November 2018 (art. L281-1 of the Code of Social Action and Families). Responsible for defining a national strategy for the large-scale deployment of this new housing model, Denis Piveteau and Jacques Wolfrom (authors of the report "Tomorrow, I can choose to live with you", June 2020) prefer to speak of "accompanied, shared, inserted" housing (API). Whatever the name chosen, this type of habitat should not be seen as an in-between, between ordinary housing and retirement home, but as a third way.
