For an Italian camper, a holiday in Corsica turned into a nightmare: she was shot in her camper, but her life is probably out of danger.

Corte - Terrible attack on the holiday island of Corsica in France: A 58-year-old tourist from Italy was injured by a bullet on Wednesday evening (May 24, 2023). She was traveling in her motorhome in the 400-strong village of Casanova near the former Corsican capital Corte in the interior of the island.

The vehicle was hit by several shots, according to the local prosecutor's office. Her husband was also in the vehicle, but fortunately he was unharmed.

Corsica: Italian tourist shot and flown by helicopter to hospital

The shots against the camper were fired in a parking lot on the RT 20 road around 22 p.m. According to the local newspaper Corse-Matin, the family should have returned to Italy today. The woman was transported by helicopter to the hospital in the island's second largest city, Bastia, and underwent abdominal surgery during the night. According to the newspaper, their lives are not in danger. The Bastia Public Prosecutor's Office has announced that it has opened an investigation into attempted murder.

The following morning, the gendarmes were on site with metal detectors "looking for shells," says Thierry Cambon, the city's mayor. According to the newspaper, over time, the parking lot has become a preferred place for motorhomes, whose drivers take a break there and sometimes spend the night.

"The victims' mobile home had been parked since 16 p.m. on Wednesday," the mayor said, citing witnesses. Although many vehicles of this type are parked there, it is located outside the village and therefore actually "unproblematic" for the inhabitants. (By the way, according to a survey, the most popular place for camping is Bavaria.)

Searching for the motive is difficult - "It makes me sick"

One local resident told the newspaper that she found it "sad, frankly, it makes me sick ... Tourists don't disturb anyone by sleeping in this place, and even if it weren't legal, it's not a reason to shoot them." She alludes to the legal situation regarding wild camping, which is prohibited in Corsica. However, since motorhomes are private vehicles, parking at rest areas is permitted within a period of seven days.

The mayor does not believe in an attack out of anger at the campers. "I have never seen an echo of citizens complaining about this phenomenon," he said. The gendarmerie of Corte has also not yet registered any cases in this regard. The parking lot is the only one in the area, so the mayor also ruled out an attack by competing parking lot owners. There was also violence against a holidaymaker in the Caribbean: A Geretsrieder (57) was shot dead in the Bahamas. (cgsc)
