You need a good balance on the SUP board, as well as in yoga. Svenja Reidelbach from Miesbach now combines both sports in one course at Schliersee. She explains why here.
Schliersee – Even on land, yoga requires a lot of balance. Beginners in particular can get into a lot of wobbling even during exercises. On a new course at the campsite in Schliersee, even the ground itself rocks. Because the asanas are not performed on the mat, but on a stand up paddling (SUP) board. And not on the shore, but on the water. What makes this sporty variation so appealing, why it is particularly effective and why even beginners can take part, explains yoga teacher and travel blogger Svenja Reidelbach (34) from Miesbach in an interview.
Ms. Reidelbach, yoga exercises on the SUP board sound like a pretty wet affair, at least for those who are inexperienced in both sports. How many times do you fall into the water per hour?
Svenja Reidelbach: As a rule, not at all. In fact, beginners in particular are often put off by this idea of participating. But since most exercises can also be done while sitting or kneeling, it is much easier than it looks. We certainly won't stand on one leg in the first lesson, although I will always offer variants for advanced learners. In principle, however, a good sense of balance is certainly not a disadvantage - and of course you should also be able to swim in an emergency.
How do you make sure that the participants don't drift away on their boards?
Svenja Reidelbach: We will tie all the boards with a long anchor rope so that we stay together in a circle in the style of a flower. If we have an abortion together, we paddle back again.
If there is still enough strength for it...
Svenja Reidelbach: (laughs) Absolutely. It's not like yoga on the water is that much more sweaty than on land. Rather, the deep muscles are more strained, because you constantly have to compensate for the slight fluctuation of the water. Because this also requires concentration, it helps you to focus mentally. This is an advantage, especially for beginners who still find it difficult to control their thoughts on land.
What else should you bring to the course besides balance and concentration?
Svenja Reidelbach: Comfortable clothes that can also get a little wet. Neoprene is rather unsuitable because of its limited mobility. You don't have to have your own board, because you can also borrow it at the campsite. Otherwise, just have fun with yoga on the Schliersee.
