The last Census certified that La Matanza is the most populous municipality in the country with 1,837,774 inhabitants, and the fight to control the district governed by Peronism since 1983 already has at least a dozen names, where Together for Change has the largest inmate.

From the singer El Dipy, to the butcher Alberto Samid, the current mayor Fernando Espinoza and the deputy Patricia "Colo" Cubría, reference of the Evita Movement and wife of Emilio Pérsico, in less than a month will close the lists

The political force that has registered the most candidates is Together for Change, where so far five interested parties have appeared. An old acquaintance is the former national deputy, current councilor for the Civic Coalition, Héctor "Toty" Flores. The social leader who founded the cooperative "La Juanita", in Laferrere, has the support of Elisa Carrió and also Horacio Rodríguez Larreta.

"There is a firm decision to win La Matanza and we know that Together is possible. With the support of Elisa Carrió and the work we do with Horacio Rodríguez Larreta and Diego Santilli, who visits our district every 15 days, we have no doubt that the possibility of winning is certain!"

Flores shares a quality with the current national deputy and former Minister of Education, Alejandro Finocchiaro: both were already candidates for mayors in La Matanza. The PRO referent this week was shown at a barbecue with Patricia Bullrich's gubernatorial candidate, Néstor Grindetti. Launched to mayor, Finocchiaro is emerging as the man of the former Minister of Security in the municipality.

Another PRO referent who appears as a pre-candidate although not yet officially is Councilman Eduardo Lalo Creus. Former member of the Corriente Clasista y Combativa (CCC), from which he left in 2013, he cultivated his social work in the René Salamanca neighborhood of González Catán.

He worked with former Governor María Eugenia Vidal and former Minister of Social Development of the Nation, Carolina Stanley. He recently met with former President Mauricio Macri and hopes to settle disputes between Bullrich and Larreta.

While the other two candidates come from the Radical Civic Union. Josefina Mendoza, was the first female president of the Argentine University Federation (FUA), with just 25 years was a national deputy between 2015 and 2019, and is the only woman who seeks to be mayor within Together for Change.

A digital native, she is active in Evolucion, the space of Buenos Aires Senator Martín Lousteau, and draws attention on the networks with her videos criticizing the ruling party.

The other radical running is Gustavo Barresi, the former president of the UCR committee in La Matanza. He proposes to divide La Matanza, and create new municipalities.

The internal one in the Frente de Todos

Although it was not made official, the current mayor Fernando Espinoza, who has governed since 2019 – before he did it between 2005 and 2015 – will seek re-election in the district. But rivals arose.

The one that is most shown is the provincial deputy Patricia "La Colo" Cubría, leader of the Evita Movement. With strong criticism of Espinoza's management, Emilio Pérsico's wife tours the neighborhoods and assures that it will take place in a PASO against the current mayor.

The last time there was an intern in the local government, in 2015 the former communal chief Verónica Magario faced the leader of the UOCRA Heraldo Cayuqueo, who so far showed no intention of competing. Cayuqueo won 30% of the Peronist votes, pierced the floor and sneaked leaders into the list that consecrated Magario.

"There was a dinner of the trade unionism of La Matanza this week and for now they decided not to compete against Espinoza," they tell Clarín in the local Peronism.

There were also movements by María Laura Ramírez, the former secretary of Social Development of Espinoza and Magario, who when she became a provincial deputy began to build with the objective of the mayorship. With arrival in Victoria Tolosa Paz, for now he only has intentions but did not assure that he will compete.

In a similar situation is the massista Daniel Novoa, president of the Belgrano Sur train, which between this year and next will have a radical change: it will arrive at Constitución in a project that began the management of Mauricio Macri and continued Alberto Fernández. That train that crosses all of La Matanza reached Pompeii and will now have a connection with the subway. Novoa was already a councilor and will depend on the national army.

The outsiders in La Matanza

This week Javier Milei confirmed that "El Dipy" will be his candidate for mayor in La Matanza. "We can leave the K's third," the economist said. Cumbia singer David Martinez confirmed it with a video. In the local government they took the news calmly, but next week they will measure with a survey.

Also this week, meat businessman Alberto Samid confirmed that he will be a candidate for mayor on the list that will take Guillermo Moreno as candidate for President and another Matanzas candidate for governor: Luis D'Elia. "For a different slaughter, Samid mayor," is heard from the planes flying over San Justo.

Samid, a chess player who boasts of not having lost to Anatoly Karpov, last year organized an "open cabildo" to unite Peronism with 2,500 kilos of meat, 4,000 sausages and the presence of Hugo Moyano.

The "King of the Flesh" faced Espinoza in the October 2007 elections, where he got 3.93% and the current mayor 50.91%. Espinoza celebrated after midnight on a truck that he improvised as a stage.

The information was that the slaughterer approached to greet from the back of the truck, where there were security personnel. Someone whispered in the ear of former mayor Alberto Balestrini that Samid wanted to say hello and the driver of Matanzas Peronism gave him a thumbs down.

Until Samid's confirmation, two months ago, the merchant Julio Rubén "Negro" Ledesma had posters in support of Guillermo Moreno and now appears only in the murals, so he could also compete with his Buenos Aires Peronist Current (CO.Pe.Bo), which has ramifications in several municipalities of the suburbs and could compete as it has already done in La Matanza.
