The University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich celebrates its birthday. It is only since 2001 that women have been admitted to study in Neubiberg.

Neubiberg – The two universities of the Bundeswehr, Hamburg and Munich, were founded in 1973 for the academic training of junior officers. The initiative came from the then Federal Minister of Defense Helmut Schmidt and marks a change in the academization of German officer training.

The university was located on the site of the former Neubiberg air base. There were six faculties (Civil Engineering and Surveying, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Education and Economics) and three technical college departments (Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering, and Business Administration). In 1978, the Faculty of Social Sciences was added. Until the beginning of the 1980s, the university was reserved solely for members of the German Armed Forces. The first president was Gerhard Wachter. After a year, he was succeeded by Horst Freiherr von Engerth.
