Moosburg – There is uncertainty on Moosburg's town square: After the bespoke tailor Gabi Urban recently announced that she would have to close her studio in the Feyerabendhaus for health reasons, it is currently completely unclear what will happen to the shop space in the most prominent location. While Urban himself is looking for a successor/tenant on social media, SPD city councillor Gerhard Beubl is now speaking out publicly: "I would like to take up the idea of former city marketing consultant Josefine Schreck," Beubl writes in an open letter to local boss Josef Dollinger, "and request that the rooms that are rented to Gabi Urban until 30 June, can no longer be rented out to third parties, but used as a citizens' office." The floors above are already used by the city – the owner of the Feyerabendhaus.

New citizens' office including tourist information and post office for Moosburg's city centre?

Also, Beubl writes, Moosburg Marketing eG could possibly use the rooms together with the city – and the municipality, "as in other cities", could operate the post office itself. This has also been at home in the tailor's studio for some time. "A tourist information office would also be a central location there," believes Gerhard Beubl. From his point of view, this solution would have "multiple synergy effects and, in my opinion, should be implemented in a timely manner".

Then he reminds us of what feels like a never-ending story in the immediate vicinity: "If the owner across the street enriches his premises with a café, as once planned, then that would be a real upgrade of our city centre and a magnet for the urgently needed revitalisation of the city centre," says Beubl's finger pointing in the direction of ex-city councillor Dieter Abele.

Fresh impetus for Moosburg's dilapidated city café

After many years of stagnation in his property, he had presented plans to the building authority to turn the run-down former city café back into a modern residential and commercial building with possible gastronomy. The preliminary building permit was approved by the city council in 2020 – but nothing visible has happened since then.

And then, these days, a formal application was made to Mayor Josef Dollinger and the city council, which also refers to the center of Moosburg: In it, Benedict Gruber (Fresh), Verena Kuch (Greens) and Stefan John (Left) suggest hoisting a so-called Pride flag (rainbow flag) at the town hall building in the future "on thematically suitable days".

Rainbow flag at Moosburg town hall demanded as a sign of diversity

The motion, which was signed by nine other city councillors from Fresh, Greens, SPD, FDP and ÖDP as well as the youth parliament in addition to the initiators, states: "Violence against queer* people is still the order of the day, especially in Bavaria, dozens of targeted crimes are reported every year." Especially in rural areas, queer people do not feel seen, but disadvantaged, discriminated against or not welcome.

Glossary

*queer is the collective term for all sexual orientations and gender identities that do not correspond to hetero- and cisnormativity, such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersexual.

"Here in Moosburg, too, there is queer hostility," which can be seen in cases of bullying in schools or the rainbow flag at the youth center, which has been damaged, torn and stolen several times. Queer people move to big cities because they feel more accepted and comfortable there. "This is unfortunate. In Moosburg, all people should be able to feel comfortable," the applicants appeal.

In her opinion, there is nothing legally to prevent flagging. "This was also the conclusion reached by the administrations of the district and the city of Freising when they decided in 2021 to hang a rainbow flag on appropriate days in the future." Even Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser emphasized only last year that such flagging was also permissible for federal authorities. The initiators consider the weekends of Christopher Street Day in Munich and Landshut as well as the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia to be suitable days.

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

With its application, the group is making a new push after previous attempts to hang a Pride flag on the town hall had failed, mainly due to the resistance of the city leader. In response, a rainbow banner was hoisted at the Hirschwirt, but later a compromise was reached and the House of Education was flagged within sight of the town hall.
