In order to be in the top ten percent as a pensioner, the income must be quite high. The gap with the average pensioner is large.
Cologne – More and more pensioners in Germany are struggling with rising prices. This is because pensions are rising only to a small extent compared to inflation. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the risk of poverty among people over 65 has risen enormously in recent years. But how much money do German pensioners actually have at their disposal on average?
Pension: This is how much money seniors have at their disposal on average
How high the pensions are approximately, show the data of the employer-related Institute of the German Economy (IW) Cologne. The economists' studies show that the median income of pensioners living alone is 1945 euros per month. If, as a pensioner living alone, you are above this 1945 euro monthly household income, you already belong to the richer half of this population group. In order to belong to the richest ten percent, however, you must have at least 3500 euros monthly household income.
By way of comparison, the pension for long-term insured persons in Germany averaged 2021 euros at the end of 1370. However, the IW counts not only the statutory pension as household income, but also rental income and other income. In the case of owner-occupied residential property, the monthly net rental value is also added.

What is the median income?
Median income (also median income) is the income that divides all income earners into two equal groups: one half has higher incomes, the other has lower incomes. Median income is more robust than average income in the face of statistical outliers (values that deviate greatly from the average).
