Cagliari, but above all America in common. The Amerigo Vespucci is the jewel of the Italian Navy named after the navigator from whom the new continent takes its name. And Luna Rossa aims to conquer the America's Cup, the highest sailing competition, the oldest sporting trophy in the world. Two excellences that met and greeted today in the Gulf of Angels, on an already summer day, among the wonder of those who, always on a boat, managed to approach and follow the event. Inevitably, at sea, a few waves from the headquarters of the Italian team that will try to take away from New Zealand the crown of queen of the waters. A historic meeting. The prototype launched last October in Cagliari has turned several times around the older "colleague" with the sails unfurled as a sign of greeting. The last time the two Italian excellences of the sea met was 21 years ago, coincidentally in New Zealand.

On board the ship launched in 1931 in Castellammare di Stabia, guests of the commander Luigi Romagnoli, the sailors of the team that in 2024 will try to bring the America's Cup to Italy, led by skipper and team director Max Sirena. Together, the crew of Vespucci and Luna Rossa, hoisted the sails. And the Italian queen of boats sailed in front of Cagliari in all its splendor. Another group of sailors was aboard Luna Rossa. The boat of world challenges approached the Vespucci at a speed of about 25 knots. Slower is the historic sailboat of the Navy, about six knots. About ten laps around the ship. "A way to greet each other - said Commander Romagnoli - in view of our respective commitments. In fact, Vespucci will face the round the world". Sirena is also radiant: "Two boats that will live great adventures - said the Rimini skipper but now Cagliari by adoption (here he bought a house and received honorary citizenship) - a way to exchange greetings. We are training every day and every day we try some new things. Then the race course will tell the truth." Now the Vespucci will continue to sail the seas for a trip around the world of almost two years. For Luna Rossa more training in Cagliari, then the World Series in Spain and Saudi Arabia, next autumn, before the 2024 edition of the America's Cup that will take place in Barcelona.
