"I didn't know anything about Schlager": This is how Helene Fischer became a superstar back then

Helene Fischer is the undisputed pop queen of Germany. The then shy 22-year-old told the MDR Riverboat in 2007 how her crazy career began.

Leipzig – Sold-out record concerts, music awards or platinum records: At the age of 38, Helene Fischer has already achieved everything that can be achieved as a pop star in Germany. But Helene Fischer also started small. In an old riverboat interview, today's pop queen reveals how her musical career began.

Helene Fischer became a pop queen because of her mom

Shy, reserved, a little nervous: this is how the then 22-year-old Helene Fischer sits in front of the TV camera of the MDR riverboat on July 6, 2007. At that time she was still quite unknown, had just made her first television appearance with Florian Silbereisen (41), one of the greatest German pop stars of all time. At that time, no one could have guessed that in a few years she would not only be the most commercially successful singer in Germany, but also one of the world's highest-earning musicians.

And it all started with a demo CD, as Riverboat presenter Jan Hofer revealed at the time: "It's mom's fault, I'd say, and it's a very dear friend of the family. The two of them circulated a demo CD of mine and it ended up with my current management."

The Helene Fischer phenomenon in numbers

With more than sixteen million records sold, Helene Fischer is the most commercially successful singer in Germany, making her one of the world's highest-earning musicians. Her albums "Farbenspiel" and "Best of Helene Fischer" are among the best-selling music albums in the country. So it's no surprise that the music awards are thrown at her: Helene Fischer has received an incredible seventeen Echos, eight Golden Hens, three Bambis and two Golden Cameras. In 2015 she received the Bavarian Television Award for "The Helene Fischer Show". Helene Fischer's only concert in Germany in 2022 took place on August 20, 2022 in front of a record crowd of 130,000 fans in Munich – the biggest concert of her career. The first 100,000 tickets were sold in 24 hours.

At that time, Helene Fischer was managed by Uwe Kanthak. "It took us a while to find each other," she admits at the time. "Because I knew he was in the Schlager business and, to be honest, I didn't know anything about Schlager at all." But after she had recorded the first two tracks, it was clear: "Yes, that's what I want to do," as Helene Fischer explains.
