At least three dead and five wounded after a shooting during a motorcycle rally in New Mexico

At least three people were killed and several wounded in a shooting Saturday during a popular motorcycle rally in a New Mexico resort town, according to authorities.

The extent of the injuries in the shooting in the city of Red River was not released. New Mexico State Police said one of the injured was flown to Denver for treatment.

"I can confirm three dead and five injured," said Red River Mayor Linda Calhoun, who confirmed one person died at the hospital.

The five people who were injured were receiving medical attention, according to state police.

In a video interview with Questa Del Rio News, Calhoun said the assailants had been arrested following the incident, which involved members of motorcycle gangs. Calhoun later confirmed those details to NBC News, Noticias Telemundo's sister network.

State police did not provide any information about the arrests or who may have been involved. Authorities announced that the scene is safe and there is "no ongoing threat to public safety."

The shooting occurred around five o'clock in the afternoon on the main street of the city, near two retail stores.

State police said in the early afternoon that they were investigating a shooting in the city.

The Phoenix field division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) said the federal agency is assisting state police in the investigation.

The resort town of 675, northeast of Taos on a mountain range at the southern tip of the Rocky Mountains, was expecting about 30,000 people over the weekend as part of the 41st Annual Red River Memorial Motorcycle Rally.

Events related to the rally include musical performances, according to an event website.

In a post on the city's Facebook page, Calhoun said the crime scene included most of Main Street. State and local law enforcement recommended that only essential businesses outside the investigation zone open, and asked that the others remain closed Sunday, he said.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said she was in contact with Calhoun and law enforcement regarding the shooting. "My thoughts are with the Red River community following this violent incident," he tweeted.
