At the "Kidical Mass", young cyclists rode through the rafting town and fought for more safety in road traffic.

Wolfratshausen – When most people hear the word demonstration, they think of the roar of battle and harsh speeches. But children cycling through the city grinning can also do demonstrations – this was proven at the "Kidical Mass" of the Wor for Future initiative. The climate protection alliance has been calling for improvements in cycling in the Loisach city for years.

Bicycle protest for children: Future Alliance calls for more bicycle safety

Jan Reiners, one of the heads of the alliance, explains: "We want a mobility concept in Wolfratshausen that takes into account all road users – including cyclists and pedestrians instead of just car drivers." The climate activists are calling for this not only because they like to sit on the bike: "We need a mobility turnaround" in order to achieve climate targets and save fossil fuels. The absolutely necessary basis for this is that cycling in Wolfratshausen is safe. "Otherwise, people will just get into the car after all." That is why it is important to involve citizens who regularly travel by bicycle, know the problem areas of the city and perhaps have ideas to solve them.

Reiners would be one of them. He likes to ride his bike himself, and so do his children. "Time and again, we find ourselves in situations where a cycle path simply stops or where it suddenly becomes tight for us when we have to switch to the road." When children are traveling alone in the city, "many parents have an uneasy feeling". As proof, Reiners cites the ADFC's bicycle climate test. In terms of valuation, Wolfratshausen has been stagnating at a weak level for years – for example, with an average grade of 3.8. For example, when it came to the feeling of safety, the respondents gave an average of 4.1, just as they did for the promotion of bicycles in the recent past.

According to the Wolfratshausen Climate Initiative, a simple solution is obvious

"We see that there would still be many measures to improve cyclists' sense of safety in a very concrete way," says Reiners. In his eyes, a simple solution would be to distinguish the bicycle lanes – there are such on Pfaffenrieder Straße and Sauerlacher Straße – from the car lane in terms of colour. "That would be very simple and would have an effect." Reiners does not want to claim that nothing is being done for cycling. "Something happens every now and then, but I don't think the issue has the priority it needs." According to Reiners, 66 Wolfratshausers took part in the Kidical Mass bicycle demonstration in order to focus on cycling.
