In The Hague, members of the group Extinction Rebellion have blocked a motorway. The police used water cannons and arrested activists – who responded with unusual methods.

The Hague – The group Extinction Rebellion protested for climate protection in The Hague on Saturday (27 May). For the seventh time, they blocked a section of a highway in the center of the city. The police cracked down on the protest. Water cannons were used after a warning. 1579 people were arrested. But the activists had apparently prepared themselves.

Police use water cannons against Extinction Rebellion – activists just keep dancing

Around 7000,12 people are said to have been on the streets on Saturday, according to Extinction Rebellion. They wanted to protest against state subsidies for fossil fuels, according to the group. For their blockade, the climate activists had chosen the A<> in the center of The Hague, which runs past the parliament and two ministries. "There is a lot of popular support for real climate action," Extinction Rebellion spokesman Aaron Pereira told AFP. The number of participants doubles every one to two months, according to the spokeswoman.

Apparently, the participants of Extinction Rebellion, which are increasingly organizing mass protests instead of sticking actions, had prepared themselves not to clear the street despite water cannons. Videos on Instagram show how numerous participants with umbrellas and ponchos remained seated in front of the water cannons. Many of those present also danced in swimwear in the sunshine under the water jets. One video clip even shows an activist in red swimming trunks, with a poster and his own small water pistol (see video above). An activist in a bikini aimed two small water pistols at the water cannons.

Property damage and bites at Extinction Rebellion demo – police also arrested actress

Even if the water guns seem harmless at first, the police arrested 1579 people during the protest. Among them were celebrities, such as actress Carice van Houten, who became known for her role as priestess Melisandre in the series "Game of Thrones". On Instagram, she shared recordings as the police took her away. The 46-year-old was allowed to return home in the evening.

The same happened to most of the other detainees. They were soon released, police said. However, 40 of those arrested would be prosecuted for damage to property and insult, among other things. According to the information, one of the activists had bitten a police officer during the arrest. Hundreds of police officers were involved in the operation.

In Germany, Extinction Rebellion is next planning a bike demo in Nuremberg on June 2, the group announces on its website. So the group's actions actually seem to be giving way to mass protests. In Germany, however, the discussions about radical protests have been replaced by the group "Last Generation". Because: Is the ban on the "last generation" coming? (chd/dpa)
