The Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull) leaves this Sunday for the first time from the 'pole position' of the Monaco Grand Prix of Formula 1, which aspires to win for the second time in his career and ratify his status as leader of the World Drivers. From 10:00 (Argentine time), at the start, he is escorted by the experienced Spaniard Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and the Frenchman Esteban Ocon (Alpine).
In an infartante definition, the two-time world champion nailed the best record of the day when all his competitors had already completed their laps and were waiting for the last attempt: he needed 1: 11.365 to travel the 3,337 meters of the street circuit and thus signed his third pole position of the year and the 23rd in his career.
Ferrari's Carlos Sainz will start fourth after teammate Charles Leclerc, who had been third, was penalised three grid positions for upsetting Britain's Lando Norris (McLaren) during Saturday's qualifying.
For Verstappen, current double world champion and leader of the general this season, it is his fourth 'pole' in this 2023 of six possible and the first of his entire career in Monaco.

Alonso's chance, one of the public's favorites
The Spaniard regretted the opportunity that had eluded him in this classification, but was optimistic about his chances in the race.
"Pole means a lot here, but today Max was a little bit faster. We will have to work on the strategy for tomorrow. If we have a good start, maybe we have a chance," he said.
