This is how sniffing nose training works: Claudia Meyer and Silvia Mack trained German shepherd Enzo at Lake Ammersee. He is German champion in his class.

Herrsching/Pöcking – "The dog is a nose animal," says Silvia Mack from Herrsching. She knows what she's talking about. She has been a member of the Herrsching Dog Club since 1984 and has been a certified dog trainer since 1990 – a designation that has only been protected for two years, she explains. In her main job, however, most people meet her solo on the street: Silvia Mack works in traffic monitoring. On a voluntary basis, the 63-year-old is chairwoman of the association, which is based on Gewerbestraße and is proud of a German champion in her ranks.

This had never happened before, and it also impressed Mayor Christian Schiller so much that he had invited the master named Enzo and his dog handler Claudia Meyer (65) to the annual reception in Herrsching, although the two live in Pöcking. Enzo trained everything he needed to win the title in Herrsching.

Since he was one year old, Silvia Mack and Claudia Meyer have been meeting once or twice a week on the Herrsching club grounds to train with the now seven-year-old long-haired shepherd dog - a particularly beautiful specimen at that. Not only shepherd dogs are trained on the spacious grounds.

"We offer a wide range of professional courses for beginners, advanced and professionals. The club has 24 members and many guests, ten to 15, who regularly come to training with their dogs. From puppy courses to rescue dog training like Enzo's," Mack explains. "One thing we should always keep in mind: Dogs only do what we teach them." And training is only successful if the animal is not humanized. "Mistakes are much more often made by the dog owner than by the dog."

Enzo doesn't make any mistakes, which is why he is the first German shepherd from the Bavaria-South district to take first place in the national winner's competition division A. "That's something like a German champion," Silvia Mack proudly emphasizes. And Claudia Meyer explains that there is also a division B. The difference is the area on which the exam takes place – A has six disciplines on 600 square meters, B on 1000 square meters.

Enzo was able to prove his skills at the Herrschinger annual reception to applause and in front of a large audience. Silvia Mack was there and quite excited. "It was pretended that he was looking for drugs, which of course was only tobacco, and was hidden in the jacket pocket of Pastor Ulrich Haberl. We were afraid that someone really had drugs with them," she says. Because Enzo is conditioned to tobacco, among other things, he actually did not sniff out the priest right away, but dipped his nose into a handbag (the first moment of shock of the two dog handlers) and finally into the jacket pocket of another guest (the next moment of shock) until he found the hidden bag at the priest's house.

Of course, the national winner test requires a lot more than just sniffing. Obedience and dexterity, area search, tracking, debris search and finally the detection of tobacco, money and data carriers are tested. "The dog can do everything that customs do at the airport," explains Claudia Meyer. "I'm not allowed to do that," says the chief secretary in a large Munich law firm sternly. "We do sports. The other is professionally with the police and customs." In the past, this was checked together, but now it runs separately.

Both women have had dogs since their youth, Claudia Meyer even dachshunds in between, it's hard to believe. "I also went to exams with him. The difference is that the German Shepherd is a German Shepherd, and the Dachshund thinks he is a German Shepherd," she says and laughs. With Enzo she practices "a little bit every day", in Herrsching then a little more. He is a so-called high-breeding dog, "a very clever one," she says affectionately.

From the eighth week of life, a dog begins to be taught basic obedience if the dog owner is serious about it. "It's like having a child," Claudia Meyer compares it. And in the end, it is always up to the people how well basic education works.

In any case, Enzo masters his obedience in an impressively exemplary manner. Claudia Meyer tells us that she once took him to the exam when she herself was in poor health. "The dog feels this weakness immediately. That was stupid." Both dog and handler should be concentrated on the matter, that's what makes a master. The fact that Enzo walks with an open tail is a sign that he enjoys it. "We want a joyful dog," emphasizes Silvia Mack.
