Thanks to Joker Breier, the season finale ends perfectly for Hansa Rostock. The striker scored in injury time to make it 2-1 against Eintracht Braunschweig. A few hours earlier, there is a trend-setting signal: Coach Schwartz extends until 2025.

Rostock - Won the last home game and kept the saviour: For FC Hansa Rostock, the season finale in the 2nd Bundesliga ended perfectly. The team of coach Alois Schwartz, whose contract had been extended by two years until 2025 a few hours earlier, defeated Eintracht Braunschweig 2-1 (0-0) on Sunday and ended up in 13th place in the final standings.

Lukas Fröde (58th minute) and Pascal Breier (90+3) scored the goals for the hosts in front of 26,500 spectators at the Ostseestadion. Immanuel Pherai (69th/foul penalty) scored for Lower Saxony, who remain in the league despite the defeat.

More important than the sixth home three-pointer was the signal that the club's management had sent a few hours earlier. Hansa extended the expiring contract with his 56-year-old coach by two years. The former Bundesliga professional had taken over Rostock in March, when they were in penultimate place in the second division table.

However, FC Hansa picked up 16 points from the last six games and even managed an early sporting rescue. "Under the direction of Alois Schwartz, we have succeeded in getting back on track and achieving the season's goal of staying in the league - despite the difficult starting position when he took office," praised CEO Robert Marien.

In the season finale, the home team first had to fend off stormy attacks from the Braunschweig "Lions" in front of a magnificent backdrop. However, the reformed defence, in which the yellow-banned Rick van Drongelen and Nico Neidhart were missing, did not show any weakness and only allowed one good Braunschweig scoring opportunity.

The sending off of ex-Rostock player Anton Donkor, who saw yellow-red after just 22 minutes after two rough fouls first against Kai Pröger and then against Nils Fröling, changed the constellation completely. In the majority, Hansa was clearly in control of the game and celebrated the supposed lead just two minutes later.

However, too soon. Kevin Schumacher's goal, who extended his contract until 2026 this week, was rightly discredited due to an offside position by centre-forward Lukas Hinterseer. The same thing happened to the guests two minutes before the break. Anthony Ujah and his family have already celebrated. However, the video assistant intervened again and also cancelled the goal due to an offside position by the set-up Keita Endo.

After the restart, Rostock continued to work diligently to take the lead - but as is usually the case during the season, they were quite unimaginative. So a standard had to be found. Fröde headed a wide throw-in from Ryan Malone into the net, untenable for Eintracht goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann. For the defender, this was his fifth goal of the season.

However, this was not the decision for a long time. After an unnecessary foul by Schumacher on Fabio Kaufmann, referee Daniel Schlager (Hügelsheim) decided on a penalty. Phgerai didn't miss the opportunity and Hansa's goalkeeper Markus Kolke didn't miss a chance. Breier, who had come on as a substitute only ten minutes earlier, made the wonderful Sunday afternoon perfect from the Hanseatic point of view. Dpa
