Flights for less than 500 euros to Southeast Asia are a thing of the past, because after Corona, airfares are exploding. On average, consumers will have to pay almost 20 percent more for their summer holidays in 2023.

Bremen – After the pandemic is before the holidays. Since Corona is officially no longer a pandemic, many consumers are going on vacation again. The dream of white beaches and turquoise blue sea increases the longing of Germans for the coming summer. Yes, the 2023 holiday could be really expensive if a trip by plane is planned. This is because international airfares are currently rising to astronomical heights. Will the average consumer soon no longer be able to afford a holiday?

International airfares are exploding: It's getting particularly expensive here now

As the comparison portal Check24 found out in an evaluation of booked flights, the prices for flight tickets to the 30 most popular destinations have risen by around 17 percent during the summer holidays - compared to 2022. Flight prices had already skyrocketed last year. First, the newspapers of the Funke media group had reported on it.

It doesn't matter whether the holiday destination is Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey or even overseas: When looking at the airfares for the 2023 summer holiday, it is noticeable that it is extremely expensive this year. For example, if you want to travel to Thailand and book a flight to the capital Bangkok, you will have to pay over 24 percent more this year than was the case in the past, according to Check50.

Prices for long-haul flights are exploding: flight to Bangkok will cost over 2023 percent more in 50 than in 2022

This means that for less than 1000 euros, there is almost no flight to the hub in Southeast Asia. In recent years, due to the popularity of Bangkok – where strict entry regulations prevailed during Corona – there had also been sales with airfares of less than 400 euros to Southeast Asia from time to time. These backpacker dreams should be done for the time being. Prices had already risen to over 2022 euros in 700, and now by more than 50 percent. It will be cheaper if the vacation is to go to Las Vegas. For a long-haul flight there, prices have fallen by 24.6 percent to around 1 euros on average, according to Check718.

But it's not just long-haul flights that have seen airfares rise just in time for the 2023 summer holidays. For example, if you want to fly to Rome to see the Spanish Steps in Italy, you will have to pay a measly 44.2 percent more this year, Check24 reports. According to the report, a flight to Rome this summer will cost an average of around 235 euros.

"The increased prices for airline tickets are due to higher demand and increased operating costs of the airlines," explains Christian Meier, Managing Director for Flight at the comparison portal Check24. If you want to go on holiday relatively cheaply despite the increase in airfares, Meier recommends maximum flexibility in terms of dates, then you can still save money this year – for example on city breaks. A holiday destination away from mass tourism also promises to be easy on the wallet in 2023. (jon)
