The big festive year is knocking: The city of Freising celebrates "2024 years of Korbinian" in 1300. An event that takes a long lead time. For this reason, the city has now invited club representatives to the Luitpoldhalle: Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher presented the previous plans to those present. © Lehmann
The arrival of St. Corbinian 1300 years ago in Freising: This is the reason why there will be no construction sites in 2024, but there will be a glittering festival and much more.
Freising – Great events cast their shadows ahead. In 2024 there will be such a major event in Freising: "1300 years of Korbinian in Freising". And because this is not only a diocesan anniversary, because not only will the state exhibition "Tassilo, Korbinian and the Bear - Bavaria in the Early Middle Ages" be on display in the Diocesan Museum, but the year 2024 will also be a city anniversary, it should also be "a celebration of citizenship by all of us for all of us", says Lord Mayor Tobias Eschenbacher. "All of us" – that's where the clubs come in.
They were informed on Thursday in the Luitpoldhalle about how they can get involved with events – including participation in the big parade. "We have big plans," said the mayor in welcoming the numerous club representatives. After the head of the city had received applause for his announcement that there would be a "break from the construction site" in the city centre because of the festive year, city archivist Florian Notter briefly explained what was actually being celebrated: The arrival of Saint Corbinian in Freising took place between 716 and 725. The year 724 was only determined in the Renaissance, Bishop Johann Franz Eckher of Kapfing and Liechteneck then determined this year and in 1724 gave the cathedral the new equipment by the Asam brothers. In 1824 there was a "somewhat more modest and bourgeois celebration", and in 1924, for example, there was a procession through the city centre.
Dynamic, diverse, self-confident
So now it's 2024. According to Eschenbacher, the company wants to present itself as a "dynamic, self-confident and diverse city". The main events have already been set and scheduled: The series of events starts on the Palm weekend (16 and 17 March) with the unveiling of the big red "1300" on Marienplatz. From 5 to 14 April, the Asam Building will be ceremoniously reopened after seven years of renovation with a major cultural programme. This will be followed by the National Exhibition (from 7 May to 3 November).
And then there are the events in which citizens, schools, organizations and clubs are in demand: "Freising: 1300 Years of Diversity" is the title of the anniversary program in spring and summer, "Freising in Europe" is the name of the program of city partner and city friendships in June and July, and on September 15 there will be a large historical parade in which the clubs are also invited to participate. The Corbinian's Week with the Youth Corbinian and the Corbinian Pilgrimage (16 to 24 November) then concludes the Jubilee Year.
And then it was up to Ingo Bartha, head of the Department of Culture and Tourism, to encourage the club representatives to participate and explain who could get involved and how to help shape the year 2024: basically all non-commercial associations, institutions and organizations based in Freising. The association can enter its project or event in an application form, which it can then submit to the tourism office by July 14, 2023 (Rindermarkt 20). There, "everything will be collected, sifted through and evaluated," says Bartha. The selected projects will be carried out as a cooperation between the city and the respective cultural partner. In other words, the association receives project funding and technical support.
Appeal: Linking history with current affairs
Bartha's request: The event should offer "something new", should deal with historical as well as current social and cultural issues against the background of "1300 years of the city of Freising" and should stimulate new perspectives. The prerequisite for funding is the preparation of a simple financial plan with an expenditure and income account, and the payment of an advance is possible in spring 2024, Bartha continued. The events will be selected by the end of July 2023, contract talks will be held in August and September 2023, and the project description for the programme booklet must be submitted by 31 October.
(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)
The situation is similar if you want to apply to participate in the pageant: September 15, 2023 is the deadline for submitting the application form, in which you have to enter the number of participants, type and size of the vehicles and the animals involved. At the end of October, you will receive the notification of participation, and on September 15, 2024, you will be allowed to ride or march along. As Eschenbacher had said so beautifully? 2024 – "It's going to be a challenge".
