Highlights: Greens and Robert Habeck in decline: According to a survey, popularity is declining, while the AfD is growing strongly. From Scholz, the majority would like to have a word of power on the heating law. The AfD was able to record a great success in the survey: At 18 percent, it reached a higher value than it has for five years. Only 31 percent of respondents are convinced that the traffic light coalition will last until the end of the legislative period in 2025.

Greens and Habeck in decline: According to a survey, the party is clearly behind the AfD. From Scholz, the majority would like to have a word of power on the heating law.

Berlin – The controversial heating law and the groomsman affair around Graichen are dragging the Greens' poll numbers further down. In the Sunday trend, which the research institute Insa collects weekly for the Bild am Sonntag, the party reaches only 13 percent. According to the preliminary report, this is one percentage point less than in the previous week and the lowest value since 2018. The AfD, on the other hand, is making strong gains and is ahead of the Greens in the polls.

Greens crash in poll – Scholz's word of power expected on heating law

According to the Insa poll for Bild am Sonntag, a large proportion of Germans would like Chancellor Olaf Scholz to put his foot down in favour of oil and gas heating. 63 percent of those surveyed were of the opinion that the SPD politician should speak a word of power in the dispute of the traffic light coalition. 19 percent were against it and 17 percent were undecided. 57 percent are against a ban on oil and gas heating and 28 percent in favor, while 15 percent have no preference.

Habeck's heating law triggers resentment – only a few still convinced by traffic lights

The FDP had prevented the bill passed by the cabinet by Economics Minister Robert Habeck and Construction Minister Klara Geywitz of the SPD from being introduced in the Bundestag. The draft provides for an end to gas and oil heating systems: new and replaced heating systems from 2024 are to be operated with at least 65 percent renewable energy. The coalition had decided that the law should come into force on January 1, 2024. However, Habeck sees room for manoeuvre at the start time.

Many doubt that the current government will cooperate in the long term. According to the Insa survey, only 31 percent of respondents are convinced that the traffic light coalition will last until the end of the legislative period in 2025. 51 percent believe that the Scholz government will collapse before then. Only 27 percent are satisfied with their work.

Greens in decline in poll numbers – AfD reaches record high due to heating crash

The AfD was able to record a great success in the survey: At 18 percent, it reached a higher value than it has for five years. Political scientist Karl-Rudolf Korte considers this ongoing dispute, especially between the FDP and the Greens, to be the main reason for the AfD's continuing flight of fancy: "At the moment, it is not because there is a crisis, but because there is a lack of confidence in government action," he told ZDF.
