Shas sources are demanding a renewed promotion of the law that would allow party chairman Aryeh Deri to return to his position as a government minister, despite the High Court decision and the freezing of the legal reform in favor of the consent talks at the president's residence.

Knesset Health Committee Chairman MK Uriel Bosso said Sunday morning that "this injustice must be solved." Bosso added in an interview to Kol Barama radio that "Deri must return to the cabinet table, and as far as we are concerned, as soon as possible." However, it is unclear whether there is a feasibility of advancing the legislation in the shadow of the talks on the reform. MK Vladimir Belyak of Yesh Atid said in response: "This will have a negative impact on the talks and the protests."

Last March, the proposal was removed from the coalition's agenda as part of a moratorium on legal reform. Prior to that, a first reading was approved, according to which the court, including the Supreme Court, sitting as the High Court, would not be authorized to conduct judicial review of the appointment and identity of ministers, for any reason, except with regard to the conditions of eligibility established by law. The provisions of the proposal will also apply to deputy ministers.

In accordance with the recommendation of the legal advisor, the Knesset members added Knesset oversight mechanisms for ministerial appointments and determined that the head of the largest opposition faction could demand a separate vote for the approval of up to a quarter of the designated ministers in a new government, if in his opinion there is doubt about their compliance with the conditions set for their tenure. In such a case, the prime minister and the designated minister will be entitled to respond to the opposition's arguments, and the Knesset will immediately vote on each of the ministers designated to be ministers whom the opposition leader demanded to vote.
