High-ranking visitors were announced for the Weilheimer Volksfest – and they came: After Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) was a guest at the Volksfest opening, CDU leader Friedrich Merz also came. He spoke at the political morning pint of the Weilheim CSU and handed out a lot to the traffic light government. The sun was shining, even if a cool wind was blowing – imperial weather at the start of the folk festival on Thursday, 18 May, which traditionally began with a stand concert on Marienplatz and a parade. Punctually at 11 a.m., the motorcade of the Prime Minister reached the church square, where Söder was received by Mayor Markus Loth and his wife and district administrator Andrea Jochner-Weiß. Then we went straight to Marienplatz for the proverbial bath in the crowd. Söder not only paid a visit to all the bands and traditional groups, he shook hands diligently, patiently had his picture taken with everyone. Then the procession set off via Schmiedstraße, Münchenerstraße, Schützenstraße and Wessobrunner Straße.

Four strokes for the barrel
At the folk festival, Mayor Loth tapped the barrel with four strokes, which earned him a mischievous remark from the Prime Minister during his greeting, because he should actually be able to do better after so many years. Söder encouraged the guests to celebrate, because the global political situation is very critical, but "we can only help if we recharge our batteries".
CDU leader spoke in the marquee
After Prime Minister Söder was a guest at the opening of the folk festival, the second Union grandee came to the beer tent on Sunday (21 May): CDU leader Friedrich Merz spoke in the fully occupied marquee. About 1,000 people had come to listen to Merz's words. He spanned the spectrum of political topics from the former constituency deputies Michaela Geiger and Franz Josef Strauss, whose quote from the "red-green ship of fools" ran like a red thread through the speech, to the current topics of the national and world political stage.
With regard to the Ukraine war, Merz admitted that the Union had also underestimated the challenge of defending peace and freedom – militarily if necessary – in the years after the end of the Cold War. "Now it is the task of all major democratic parties to make the Bundeswehr operational again," he says.

In addition, he called for more acceptance for the ideas of the opposition for the sake of the cause. The traffic light had "flatly rejected more than 200 motions from the CDU/CSU parliamentary group – that is disrespectful!" Cooperation with the Greens and the FDP is "currently not possible".
